macOS Monterey now official on Macs: 5 things you should know

Today is the day that every Mac user has been waiting for since Apple celebrated WWDC 2021 last June. After several months in beta, macOS 12.0 , also known as macOS Monterey, has finally arrived today. Here are several things about it that we think you should know about this new version of the operating system for Apple computers.

macOS Monterey now official on Macs

Does it reach everyone at the same time?

Yes. Like all Apple updates, this version has officially and simultaneously arrived in all countries. And it has also done it on a par with iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, watchOS 8.1 and tvOS 15.1. It is therefore today a complete day with all Apple equipment receiving updates.

Is it compatible with your Mac?

Unfortunately, this year some Macs are left out that were compatible with the Big Sur versions. For Monterey you will have to have one of these computers:

  • Mac mini that were released in 2013 or later.
  • Mac Pro that were released in 2013 or later.
  • iMac that was released in 2015 or later.
  • iMac Pro (there is only one model).
  • MacBooks that were released in early 2016 or later.
  • MacBook Airs that were released in early 2015 or later.
  • MacBook Pros that were released in 2014 or later.

How you should update your computer

If you have verified that your Mac is on the list, proceeding to update it is as simple as going to System Preferences> Software Update and proceed to download and install this new version. You do not have to restore the system and reset it without your data, since it is prepared to be fully optimized without having to resort to this.

What if it doesn’t come out or it goes too slow

If this version still does not appear or you notice that the download is very slow, keep in mind that you must have a good internet connection. In any case, it is usually normal that being so heavy versions take so long. And if we take into account that there are thousands of people who are proceeding to it, there may be a certain saturation of servers, so arm yourself with patience and if you cannot, wait for tomorrow.

The main novelties that it incorporates

It is worth that some of the best novelties of macOS Monterey do not arrive yet in this version, as it is the case of Universal Control. However, there are others that you can have from now on, these being some of the most outstanding:

  • Shortcuts hit Macs after landing on iPhone and iPad a few years ago. Automator and Terminal are still available, but in this app you can create automations in a more intuitive way.
  • Novelties of FaceTime in relation to noise isolation, being able to create links to video calls and even being able to make calls this way to Android and Windows (via the web).
  • Changes in Safari both visually with more customizable tab systems, as well as faster and safer browsing.

Safari

  • New concentration modes that improve the possibilities of the classic Do Not Disturb mode, being able to personalize much more the incoming notifications that you want to receive at all times.
  • Live Text is a function that will allow you to take the text that appears in any photograph and treat it as if it were normal text by pasting it in a text editor or using it to search or translate it in Safari.
  • Quick Notes: You can quickly take notes at any time by simply moving the cursor to the lower right corner.
