MacOS Catalina Update Makes Your Mac Warm

Don’t worry if you’re noticing lately that your Mac is getting hotter than necessary, especially if you notice this since you upgraded to macOS 10.15.7. A very widespread failure is being reported that makes this happen and although there is no official solution from Apple, MacRumors recently proposed a solution that is working for many users. We tell you everything below.

“Accountsd” is to blame for this warming

The problem that is currently occurring on many Macs appears within seconds of starting the computer. You may be surprised that the fans suddenly start to blast without even opening an application and keeping your Mac in a good position when it comes to temperature and humidity. If you open the Activity Monitor you can see that there is a process called “Accountsd” that is consuming high percentages of the CPU, being the main cause of excessive heating of the computer.

MacOS Catalina Update Makes Your Mac Warm

This “Acountsd” refers to a collection of background actions that take place on Macs, which are closely related to each user’s Apple account and their credentials to log in to multiple services. However, it is not normal that you are consuming so much. A solution that has been able to serve a multitude of users, including several members of this newsroom, is the following:

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Go to Apple ID.
  • Go to the Overview tab.
  • Click Sign out.
  • Restart your Mac.
  • Follow the same route again and log in with your Apple ID.

We insist on emphasizing that this problem could not be solved by following these steps, so it is not a one hundred percent effective solution, although today it is the only one that can be tried and nothing happens to try. Logging out with your Apple ID will cause some services such as calendars, notes and photos to stop syncing, but when you log back in you will see them reappear. The way to check if this has worked is by opening the Activity Monitor once everything has been synchronized and if you see that “Accountsd” no longer appears it will be that it has been fixed. Do not worry if the fans sound during the login, since in this case it is normal for it to happen.

Waiting for a complementary update

The new version of macOS Big Sur is just around the corner, so we understand that macOS 10.15.7 could be the latest update to macOS Catalina. However, there are many teams that will not be able to continue updating their software to the latest versions after this, so it is evident that Apple cannot leave them with this heating problem. Therefore we could be about to see a new software update for these devices and since macOS 10.15.8 would be a very hypothetical version, Apple could simply release a complementary update that solves this problem. Therefore, if you have not been able to solve the problem on your own, you will have no choice but to wait for this new version to arrive.
