Maintaining the software of a device is expensive for brands, but necessary to keep the terminals updated and users happy. On many occasions, Android phones end up with only one large operating system update , while a large majority, at least the most popular ones, have two guaranteed updates.

The war between the different manufacturers is making the manufacturers move, and Samsung has taken the step being one of the first companies that could guarantee up to three years of operating system updates . This is a play that quite possibly makes the same play arise for its most direct competition, so if so, once again the great beneficiaries will be the users.
Why so few updates?
As we say, on many occasions it is one or two version updates of the Android operating system that most terminals usually receive. In special cases such as mobile phones signed by the Android One program, these two updates are guaranteed, but in other cases, the user may or may not be lucky enough to buy a model whose support is going to be abandoned , as has happened to the owners from Xiaomi‘s Mi Mix 3 5G.

A company’s resources are limited in terms of software maintainability, and mobiles are released incessantly and in large numbers. An infinite or very long maintenance in time can be unfeasible and not profitable in many occasions. It is clear that many mobiles that are no longer going to receive Android 10 or Android 11 , are perfectly valid to install these new versions, since their hardware capabilities far exceed the minimum requirements that Google demands, but simply, their support in this regard it is abandoned and manufacturers turn the page.
The Android phones that have been updated the most
In the history of Android there are a few privileged mobiles whose support has led them to discover in their guts up to four different versions of Android. It is something that is not seen today, but as we have seen earlier, the fierce competition between manufacturers could come to recover.
In this list, of course Google’s mobiles stand out, privileged in this sense, or those that were manufactured for Google by Huawei, LG or Motorola. We also find terminals from brands with no presence already in our market such as Sharp or HTC. The list shows us that keeping an updated mobile with all Android functions intact is not an impossible task.
