Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana”: News, Release Date and Download

Linux Mint is a fairly popular distribution within the Linux ecosystem. This distro is based on Ubuntu but removes all the elements that users do not like, such as Canonical sponsored applications, improves privacy and adds a series of own applications and programs to improve the management and administration of the distro. It is what Ubuntu should have been without Canonical’s hand.

Those responsible for Linux Mint are constantly updating this Linux distro to bring users the best possible experience. Generally, every time a new version of Ubuntu is released, updates to Linux Mint are also released, with the same support plan.

In late April, Canonical will release Ubuntu 20.04 , the first 2020 update to come with 5-year LTS support. And for this reason, these developers are already finalizing the launch of the new version of this distro, Linux Mint 20, which will have the code name “Ulyana”.

News from Ulyana; Linux Mint 20

The new version of Linux Mint is not going to reach users with a large number of revolutionary changes and innovations, but it does highlight a number of aspects that will make it even better and allow it to offer the best possible experience to all users.

The first of the changes that we must take into account is that, finally, Linux Mint removes 32-bit ISO images . It makes no sense to continue using these operating systems at this point, when virtually any CPU supports 64-bit architectures. If someone has a 32-bit processor, they will have to find another distro adapted to their PC. Of course, the ISO is not 32-bit does not mean that 32-bit applications do not work. These will continue to work without problems.

Another of the changes that we can see in this distro are related to the monitor and the screen settings . The first thing is that, from now on, we will be able to change the refresh rate of the screen from the Cinnamon 4.6 configuration. Monitors image scale settings have also been improved. Instead of having to choose either 100% or 200%, we can now choose the value we want between 100% and 200%. Also, if we have multiple monitors, each one can have its own value.

The Linux Mint file explorer has also been updated and improved. The administrator “Nemo” (a fork of GNOME Files) had serious problems opening folders with many files inside. That was because the browser was trying to load thumbnails for all the files and, until it was done, it didn’t load the folder. Finally, this problem has been solved by showing generic icons for all files by default and updating them with thumbnails as necessary. This change also reduces disk I / O transfers.

As for the appearance of Linux Mint, new colors (Pink and Aqua) have been included within the Mint-Y theme .

This new version also releases Warpinator, a tool for easily sharing files within a local network.

At the moment there is no official date for the release of this new version of Linux Mint . However, taking into account the history of this distro, we can predict that it will be launched in June, two months after the release of Ubuntu 20.04, which will arrive later this month. Therefore, at the moment we can only download Linux Mint 19.3, the latest version of this distro.

At the moment there is also no beta, so we cannot test this distro. The beta will surely arrive in May so that the most impatient users can try this distro. However, for now, we can only wait.
