Why MIUI 12 Updates Take Time to Arrive

When Xiaomi launches any of its important operating system updates, it is common for users to shake the hornet’s nest, who fervently ask for their own share of news for their mobile. Xiaomi offers an official calendar that can vary more or less, but that except for surprise is usually very precise and that affects the official global Rom. However, as with MIUI 12, sometimes these updates take longer than necessary to arrive.

Why MIUI 12 Updates Take Time to Arrive

Except for delays that may arise from unexpected failures, or cancellations for compatibility reasons, the MIUI 12 updates to the different Xiaomi terminals are arriving according to the scheduled calendar. But many users flood the official forums of the company, indicating that their models have not yet received the expected update, despite the fact that other similar models already enjoy the news.

A delay due to the operator?

It should be taken into account that since Xiaomi left China in 2017, mobile phone operators around the world, including Spain, have been selling terminals of the brand. This implies that some of them have agreed with Xiaomi to implement a firmware that is a variant with respect to the official one, and that allows operators to install their own applications, limit functions, etc…. For this reason, these ROMs take significantly longer to update than the official global ROMs.

Differentiate between ROM type

Likewise, it is possible that our operator offers us a mobile with the official global Rom , without modifications. It is also useful information when buying a second-hand mobile, as information that we can ask the seller. In any case, we can differentiate between operators by taking a look at the information in the ROM itself.

  • Movistar : the last two letters are TF (Telefónica)
  • Vodafone : the last two letters are VF
  • Orange : the last two letters are OR
  • Global Rom : we will see the letters MI and the last two as XM
  • European global rom : we will see the letters EU and XM in the last two letters

To wait or not to wait

Therefore, only the official free ones, more precisely follow the official Xiaomi update period. Otherwise, the options are to wait for the specific update for the carrier ROM to be released, or if patience is not our thing, change the carrier ROM to the official global ROM. However, it may not compensate the waiting time with the risks that this implies if we do not have previous experience in this type of system modifications.
