Compare the exact model year when choosing a Kindle or Paperwhite. A discounted older device can have different display, lighting, charging and storage features from a newly announced model with the same family name.

These are dated announcement prices checked on 11 October 2026, not current quotes for every country or configuration. Amazon’s official 2026 announcement says Paperwhite preorder availability is rolling out by region. Check the local listing and delivery date.
Which features matter for your reading?
Choose the smaller Kindle if portability is the priority. Compare Paperwhite’s reading area and adjustable warm light if you read for long sessions. Signature features are worth comparing when automatic lighting, storage or its supported dock matter to you; not every reader needs them.
Published battery life is based on specified reading conditions, not continuous video playback. Waterproofing also has defined test limits; follow the device’s care instructions.
Check older deals carefully
The 2024 and earlier comparisons in this article were historical, not permanent specifications. Verify generation, storage, advertising option, condition and accessories before comparing prices. A case or charging accessory for one generation may not fit another.
Books, subscriptions and color
A hardware purchase does not include every book or require Kindle Unlimited. Check your books, library-service region and supported document workflow independently. The phrase “edge-to-edge color” in the new design announcement also describes physical device colors; it does not make every Kindle a color-screen reader. Colorsoft is the separate color-display family.
