Kiddle: What is Google for Children and How the Child Search Engine Works

The Internet has all kinds of possibilities and is a very effective tool for any child to search for information, learn or entertain. But it is advisable to use parental control on all platforms or pages that allow it, such as parental control of Netflix or the use of YouTube Kids instead of the usual version. But also Kiddle is a good option for the little ones in the house, a Google for children. A search engine adapted to minors with content specially filtered for them in thematic or form.

Google is a very practical tool in which we can find everything: games, coloring images, information for work or homework … But its use by a child can carry some risks such as the search engine takes us to pages of doubtful reliability or With adult content. To do this, Kiddle is a Google for children, an alternative to the search engine that works in a similar way but that exclusively has content and sources that can be consulted by everyone.

Kiddle is an Internet search engine focused on children, children who need to consult or search for information in the same way that you did with the Larousse or the Encarta. It is an alternative to Google for underage children or for those who begin to familiarize themselves with the Internet without finding potential dangers when they are quenching their curiosity.

Interface and design

The interface of Kiddle is exactly identical to that of Google although more pleasant and careful than usual. Striking results, large letters, colors and images that make it easy to navigate through the different sections or menus or that allow children to orient themselves comfortably in the alternative Google search engine. Although the options it allows us are the same: web, images, news or videos.

In general, Kiddle stands out for showing a large and easy to understand source. Use the Arial font in a large size in the search results in order to facilitate readability by children. Large thumbnails are also used to make it easy to access content when children do not read. According to the website itself, this will facilitate scanning the results and differentiating them and will function as visual clues for children who do not read as quickly as adults.

Search Results

What we ask a search engine of this type is to provide us with security and filters so that the navigation of the smallest of the house. Therefore, the search engine orders the results from the most accessible to the least, the most recommended for children first and the others will appear later. In addition, it eliminates all types of websites with explicit content and a team of editors monitors and selects the results that appear in the search engine.

Kiddle shows the results, as we say, following a clear scheme: first we will see the pages written for a child audience, then we will see the pages for adults but easy to understand for children and, finally, we will see expert content more complex and difficult to assimilate but filtered and sure.

  • From the first result to the third, approximately, you will see pages aimed at children who have been chosen and checked by the publishers of the search engine. Results that will appear at the beginning and written especially to be understood by them without any problem.
  • Then, in the results from the fourth to the seventh, we will find safe and reliable sites that have been reviewed by the publishers of the search engine. It is not about pages and sites written for children but for adults but they have accessible language and are written in a simple way.
  • Finally, from the eighth result and thereafter, we will see adult sites that have more specific content and more complex to assimilate or understand for children. These are safe sites that have passed the filter and will allow more information when the previous ones are too basic or if they want to go deeper into a topic.

Above these results and the first when doing the search, we will see a gray shaded box that will show us three or four advertising links and advertisements related to what we have searched in Kiddle.

Filters and Security

One of Kiddle’s strengths is that it does not collect any personal information from its users and we do not need to register in order to use the search engine when we need it. In addition, the records made are automatically deleted every 24 hours.

Kiddle also has a filter that blocks searches for words that can show results considered “unfit.” When searching for a word related to adult content, a funny robot will appear on the page that will encourage us to try again with another search (“Oops, try again!”) And will not show us results related to it.
