It can happen that, suddenly, the keyboard begins to write numbers when we press a letter. Everything happens for a reason, so we tell you how to fix it.

Keyboard Typing Numbers Instead of Letters

How to fix keyboard typing numbers instead of letters

Let’s start with the good news: your PC is not infected , nor is anything serious wrong with it. There are keyboards that do not include a numeric keypad, so manufacturers try to incorporate it so as not to leave the user without said function.

To do this, they use function keys known as ” Fn “, which we see on laptops and keyboards from certain manufacturers. Your keyboard probably writes numbers instead of letters because the numeric keyboard is on, that is, the ” num lock ” key. This key can be physically on the laptop keyboard, or it must be activated by the Fn key.

With this key activated, the keyboard allows us to press letters , but numbers appear on the screen : this is because the key we are pressing is assigned a number if “num lock” is activated. You may have noticed that some letters continue to work as before, this is because they are not assigned a number, so it will not matter to us whether “num lock” is activated or not.

Therefore, the problem is that the user does not know that he has to deactivate the num lock key . However, the problem may be compounded if the “num lock” key does not work as well if you have used an external keyboard, enable the key and we have disconnected.

Press the Num lock key on your keyboard

Normally, it is usually found in the same place on all keyboards: on normal keyboards , above 7 ; on laptop keyboards without a numeric keypad, in the first row on the right . However, you may find this key elsewhere if your keyboard is very old. In the case of normal keyboards , we will have an LED light that will indicate if it is activated or deactivated; if it is off, it means that it is disabled.

On the other hand, many laptops do not have the option to illustrate whether the key is on or off, but there are others that do incorporate an LED light on the key itself. As you can see below, if we press Fn + Num lock , we will activate the number keyboard, so theOwill be 6 , the “K” will be 2, etc.

Disable it from the internal Windows keyboard

In the case that you work with Windows, you have the possibility to deactivate this key using the keyboard provided by the operating system. We recommend doing this only when the Num lock key does not work .

  • We press the Windows key + R and type osk . Press Enter .
  • Next, the Windows keyboard will appear, being able to deactivate the key by clicking on it.
  • You can now use the keyboard normally.

Broken Num lock key, how to fix keyboard typing numbers

Finally, we offer you this solution for those cases in which the key is broken and we cannot deactivate it . In this sense, the solution that we propose is to use an external keyboard, in the event that the problem occurs in a keyboard built into a laptop.

Basically, we connect the keyboard via USB or PS / 2 and wait for Windows to install the driver. If the portable keyboard had this key activated, you will see that the Num lock LED will light up on the keyboard that we just connected. We will only have to press the Num lock key and observe that the LED light has turned off.

Then the keyboard that writes numbers should have been corrected and work correctly.
