The iPhone continues its evolutionary journey, with the latest iOS 17 update introducing a new level of artificial intelligence implementation in the Photos app. Previously, the iPhone showcased its ability to identify foreground elements for selection. With the latest operating system, AI takes a giant leap forward, now capable of autonomously recognizing the content within photos, eliminating the need for manual identification. Moreover, this AI-driven feature is set to improve over time through user interaction.
When capturing photos with the iPhone, the Photos application now features a button that provides detailed information about the image’s content. In addition to offering metadata and geographical location details, the latest addition informs users about the objects within the photo.
iOS 17 is notable for its extensive utilization of artificial intelligence, with a unique approach that processes data locally on the iPhone’s chip, eliminating the need for constant external server connectivity. This implementation extends to older iPhone models, including the iPhone 11 and XR, where AI can recognize image content without relying on the internet. However, full utilization of this feature may require an internet connection in some cases.
Consult is the new smart Photos feature on iPhone
The “Check Now” function within the information button unveils information about the photo’s content. For instance, if the image features an animal or a plant, iOS’s AI can identify and categorize it accordingly. Users will notice a modified “i” button at the bottom of the menu buttons, which, when selected, opens a contextual menu offering the “Consult” section. This section provides related information, additional images, and similar content stored on the device.
Crucially, the availability of related content and additional information depends on internet connectivity. While iOS 17 can recognize content locally, accessing supplementary data or images necessitates an internet connection, enabling the iPhone to connect to external databases. Importantly, the core processing and content recognition occur within the device’s processor, ensuring user data remains local and secure.

This localized approach to artificial intelligence, similar to other features such as on-device voice recognition introduced in iPhone 12 Pro models, provides users with enhanced functionality while maintaining privacy and data security. Users also have the option to report any issues with the feature, helping refine its performance over time through future system updates.
The “Consult” function is available on all iPhones compatible with iOS 17, starting from the iPhone XR onwards. Users with older yet iOS 17-compatible devices can enjoy this feature without additional installations, promising further enhancements and expanded capabilities in the future.
