The iPhone Duo is Apple‘s first foldable iPhone, and choosing one involves more than picking a storage size. You also need to decide whether its larger screen fits your everyday habits and what kind of case makes sense around a folding device.
Preorders are open, with US availability scheduled for October 23, 2026. The phone starts at $1,999, while Apple’s standard iPhone Duo Case costs $79 and the Folio with Kickstand costs $129. Here is how those choices fit together before you order.
Based on Apple’s published product information, checked October 18, 2026. Prices below are US prices before tax; availability and features can vary by region.

iPhone Duo at a glance
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the Duo combines a small outer screen with a much larger folding inner display.
| Feature | Published specification |
|---|---|
| Displays | 7.6-inch inner OLED and 5.4-inch outer OLED |
| Refresh rate | ProMotion up to 120Hz on both displays |
| Chip | A20 Pro |
| Rear cameras | 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide |
| Authentication | Touch ID in the side button |
| Folded size and weight | 84.1mm wide, 11.3mm thick; 254g |
| Storage choices | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB |
The important handling question is how that folded width and weight feel to you. If you usually buy a narrow, lightweight phone, try the Duo in a store before committing, ideally with the type of case you plan to use.
What the folding screen changes in everyday use
The strongest reason to consider the Duo is having more room for tasks you already do. Apple’s product overview shows Split View for working with two apps side by side. That could mean reading a booking email while checking details in another app, or keeping reference material beside your notes.
Think of two or three situations where this would save you repeated app switching. If you cannot name any, spend time trying the larger display before paying for it. A bigger screen is most useful when it improves a routine, rather than becoming something you unfold only occasionally.
App behavior also matters. Check the services you depend on, including work apps, banking and video calling. A large display does not by itself tell you how well every individual app uses the space.
For photography, the specification includes an optical-quality 2x option from the Main camera. That is not a separate long-range telephoto lens. Decide which focal lengths you actually use, and wait for independent camera comparisons if image quality is your main reason to upgrade.
Battery figures need similar context. Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display. These are manufacturer test results, not a promise of your daily screen-on time. Navigation, mobile reception, games and how often you unfold the phone will affect your experience.
US price: budget for the phone and case together
The US Apple Store configurator lists these outright prices for connecting to a carrier later:
| Storage | Phone price | With $79 Case | With $129 Folio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | $2,078 | $2,128 |
| 512GB | $2,199 | $2,278 | $2,328 |
| 1TB | $2,599 | $2,678 | $2,728 |
| 2TB | $3,199 | $3,278 | $3,328 |
Combined totals are simple additions before tax, without trade-in credits, financing or other accessories. Check how much storage your current phone actually uses before choosing a capacity. Leave room for the photos, videos and downloaded files you expect to keep over the next few years.
The launch date is not a delivery guarantee. Read the estimate for your exact color, storage and delivery address at checkout. Also confirm eSIM support with your carrier: Apple lists the Duo as an eSIM-only device worldwide.
iPhone Duo case: what does Apple’s $79 option offer?
The official iPhone Duo Case is a two-part polycarbonate design with a matte coating, offered in Sand and Navy Blue. Apple describes coverage around both sides of the phone and support for MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified charging with the case left on.

That makes it the straightforward official option to consider if you want a shell-style case. Before choosing it or a third-party alternative, check three practical details:
- Hinge coverage: look at the case open and closed. A claim of front-and-back coverage does not establish that a separate hinge shield is included.
- Access and handling: check the side-button opening, charging-port clearance and how the front frame affects gestures and grip.
- Installation and removal: read the manufacturer’s instructions, including any adhesive requirements, replacement strips and removal precautions. Charging magnets alone do not explain how every case component stays attached.
We have not tested either Apple case for drop protection, grip or long-term hinge wear. Treat this as a comparison of their published designs, and look for independent testing if those qualities will determine your purchase.
Accessory compatibility deserves its own check, too. A charging-compatible case does not guarantee that every magnetic battery will fit correctly. Our guide to model-specific Apple MagSafe battery compatibility explains why the exact battery model matters.
Standard Case or Folio with Kickstand?
The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand uses Apple’s TechWoven fabric and adds an adjustable built-in stand. Apple lists MagSafe and Qi charging compatibility for this model as well.
| Choice | US price | Main distinction | Worth considering when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo Case | $79 | Two-part matte polycarbonate shell | You want the simpler official shell design. |
| iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand | $129 | TechWoven fabric and integrated stand | You regularly prop the phone up to read, watch or make calls. |
The Folio costs $50 more. Judge that difference against how often you would use its stand. If you already carry a stand you like, it may duplicate something you own. If you often prop a phone against a mug or book, an integrated stand could be convenient. Those are practical reasons to choose, without assuming the higher price means better drop protection.
What to check before you order
Try the folded shape, confirm your carrier and essential apps, then choose the case around how you will actually use the phone. For either case, inspect pictures of the edges and hinge instead of relying on a generic “full protection” description.
If you want a stylus for note-taking, check the timing carefully. Apple lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) support as coming later in 2026. Do not build your launch-day workflow around that feature until Apple confirms it is available.
For a first-time foldable buyer, a short in-store trial and clear return terms may be more useful than rushing to choose the most expensive configuration. The aim is to buy the screen space and accessories you will use every day.
iPhone Duo and iPhone Duo case FAQs
What is the iPhone Duo?
It is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, combining an outer display for closed-phone use with a larger inner display for reading, viewing content and supported multitasking.
When will the iPhone Duo be available?
Apple opened preorders on October 16, 2026, with US availability beginning October 23. Delivery estimates depend on the configuration and location; check your order’s estimate separately.
How much does the iPhone Duo cost?
US outright pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The base phone plus the $79 Case totals $2,078 before tax; with the $129 Folio, it is $2,128 before tax.
Does the iPhone Duo need a specially designed case?
A case is optional, but one you buy should explicitly list iPhone Duo compatibility. Other iPhone cases are not substitutes for its folding shape, display frames and button layout.
Does Apple’s iPhone Duo case support MagSafe?
Yes. Apple’s case listings support charging through the case with MagSafe, Qi2 25W or Qi-certified chargers. Charging speed also depends on the charger and power supply.
Does the case protect the hinge and folding screen?
Apple describes front-and-back coverage, but its standard case listing does not establish complete hinge or inner-screen protection or publish a drop-height rating. Check the exact covered surfaces rather than assuming a two-part case protects everything.
What is the difference between the Case and the Folio?
The $79 Case is a matte polycarbonate shell. The $129 Folio uses TechWoven fabric and includes a kickstand. Choose around the design and stand you need; we have not compared their durability in testing.
Does iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?
Apple says support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) is coming later in 2026. As of October 18, it remains a forthcoming feature rather than something to assume will work at launch.
