Next month the iPhone 5c will be obsolete
MacRumors has had access to a document by which they can confirm that Apple will declare this device obsolete. This happens with those products of the company that were stopped selling in their stores more than five years ago and less than seven, while those that are not manufactured in those periods of time are also included. The main meaning of this is that they cannot be repaired in official services .
It has been years since the iPhone 5c stopped receiving software updates, having stayed at iOS 10.3.4. Although this version already weighed enough for this team, the truth is that they continue to perform well in that version and possibly the typical user who has it does not need anything else, since a hypothetical iOS 11 would have ended up leaving him as a paperweight. To this is added the impossibility of repairing it with official parts, although there will surely be third-party services that will agree to repair it.
It should be noted that the 15-inch MacBook Pro from mid-2014 will also be added to this list at the same time as the iPhone 5c. For these teams the same will happen as far as repairs are concerned.
Why was this phone so controversial?
For practical purposes this was actually an iPhone 5, since it shared identical specifications and in terms of dimensions it was also very similar. It was launched in 2013, a year after the 5 and therefore did not have a priori because it was a bad device. In fact it was not, but its price and the arrival on par with the iPhone 5s played a trick on it.
Its polycarbonate body in various colors was attractive, but it did not give the feeling of being in front of a premium team for the price that was paid for it. In fact, Apple was so disappointed with sales that a “c” range of its iPhones was never seen again. Of course, in 2018 the iPhone XR appeared with a similar approach in terms of being the colored phone with somewhat more cut-out features than the high-end model and the brand did well. In fact, last year it continued with the iPhone 11 and this year it will do the same with the 12, but this time with a rounder price and more appropriate materials.
This is why we speak of the iPhone 5c as a legend, which despite the fact that it is not entirely positive, does not make the phone stop being remembered. In any case we insist on emphasizing that for technical purposes it was a very good terminal, but already in the middle of 2020 it could be an excellent time to retire it if you still have one, having the iPhone SE 2020 as a potential candidate for that change.
