iPhone 12: the Manufacturer of the A14 Chip Reveals the Power of the Mobile

2020 still has some great presentations left like Google’s Pixel 5, Huawei‘s Mate 40 and of course, Apple‘s iPhone 12. Much is being rumored about the new iPhone, including data on their possible design, number of models to be launched or their power. Now it has been TSMC itself, supplier of Apple’s chips, which has put us on the trail of the potential that the iPhone 12 will have inside.

iPhone 12: A14 Chip Reveals the Power

During the last weeks we have heard some rumors, from various leaks and leakers, about the possible power of the iPhone 12. Let us remember that the A13 Bionic has lost ground compared to the Snapdragon 865 and it is something that Apple wants to redeem in the new models.

TSMC data on A14 chip

Now it has been TSMC, who has detailed some of the improvements in performance or power of its new manufacturing process in 5nm (measurement in nanometers) that is expected to be used for the first time in the iPhone 12, such as the new A14 Bionic. In the chip vendor’s document, it can be seen how the older 7nm process of the A13 Bionic is represented by the designation N7, while the newer 5nm processors have the designation N5.

Compared to the N7 A13 processor, the new A14 could be 15% faster and up to 30% more efficient . This means that Apple could prioritize energy efficiency over power in the new model. A more efficient processor allows you to maintain a more moderate battery capacity and therefore make improvements in the design. Everything indicates that TSMC is producing these chips en masse as the brain of the next iPhone 12.

TSMC even refers to future chips manufactured in the 3nm manufacturing process, which could be between 25% and 30% more efficient in terms of energy consumption and between 10% and 15% more powerful than those of 5nm. However, Apple can always play with these figures by further optimizing performance or efficiency thanks to the joint work between hardware and software, in this case, iOS 14.

The iPhone that we will see

Apple is expected to introduce four models with a 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch “iPhone 12”, and 6.1 and 6.7-inch “iPhone 12 Pro” devices. It is expected that this year all have support for 5G among other improvements. Their official arrival is expected to take place sometime in the coming month of September, although the idea of two presentation events is gaining momentum, starting with September 10.
