Microsoft Edge on Linux: Install, Update or Uninstall

On Linux, install Microsoft Edge from Microsoft’s Linux download, then update or remove it through the package manager used by your distribution. For Ubuntu and Debian, that is usually APT. Fedora uses DNF, while openSUSE uses Zypper. Removing the package does not automatically erase your browser profile or data saved in your home folder.

install, update and uninstall Microsoft Edge on Linux

Check the Linux version and download source

Start with Microsoft’s official Edge download page and its supported operating-system list. Support depends on the distribution, version and architecture; “64-bit Linux” is not a promise that every Linux device can run the same package.

Choose a .deb package for a supported Debian or Ubuntu setup, or the appropriate .rpm package where Microsoft offers it for your RPM-based distribution. Use the stable channel unless you specifically want to test Beta or Dev.

Install Edge on Ubuntu or Debian

Open the downloaded DEB with your distribution’s software installer and review the prompts. If you prefer a terminal, move to the folder containing the downloaded package and install that local file. For example, with one matching installer in the current folder:

sudo apt install ./microsoft-edge-stable_*.deb

Use the exact downloaded filename if several files match. The ./ tells APT to use a local package. Read the proposed changes before confirming, then open Edge from your app menu.

Our Linux app-installation guide explains the difference between a downloaded package and a repository. Avoid copying an old repository script without checking its current signing-key and distribution instructions.

Update Microsoft Edge on Linux

If the installed channel’s repository is configured and enabled, use the distribution’s software updater or the matching package-manager commands. Close Edge after saving your work, install the available update, then reopen it.

Distribution family Update the stable package
Ubuntu / Debian sudo apt update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade microsoft-edge-stable
Fedora sudo dnf upgrade microsoft-edge-stable
openSUSE sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper update microsoft-edge-stable

These commands target the stable package. If you installed microsoft-edge-beta or microsoft-edge-dev, use that installed package name instead. A different desktop, such as Xfce, does not by itself change Ubuntu’s package manager.

APT’s manual and the Zypper guide explain package-manager behavior. Inside Edge, the About page is useful for checking the running version; do not assume it uses the same updating workflow as Edge on Windows.

What if no update is available?

  • Read any repository or signing-key error from the refresh step. Do not disable signature checking to make it disappear.
  • Check that you are updating the channel you installed.
  • Check whether the Microsoft repository is enabled in your software-source settings.
  • If necessary, download the current compatible package from Microsoft and install it using the normal package-manager workflow.
  • Restart Edge before comparing its displayed version again.

Uninstall Edge from Ubuntu, Fedora or openSUSE

Save or export anything you need first, then close the browser. Use the command matching your distribution and installed channel:

Distribution family Remove the stable package
Ubuntu / Debian sudo apt remove microsoft-edge-stable
Fedora sudo dnf remove microsoft-edge-stable
openSUSE sudo zypper remove microsoft-edge-stable

Review the proposed removals before confirming. If you installed Edge using another packaging system, use that system’s removal process instead of assuming the commands above apply.

Does APT purge remove all Edge data?

No. sudo apt purge microsoft-edge-stable also removes package-managed configuration files, but APT does not use it to wipe your home-folder data. Bookmarks, local browser profiles, cached data or shortcuts can remain. It is not a promise to remove “all traces.”

Back up important browser data before separately clearing a profile, and review any account-sync choices independently. If you are moving to Firefox, our Firefox versus Firefox ESR guide explains which edition to choose.
