If you are looking for a good application to be able to edit your videos professionally, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on Final Cut. In the App Store we find iMovie, an Apple app that will allow us to edit all our videos to create incredible trailers and even small home movies . In this article we analyze the tools offered by this application that will do us quite well to make our homemade assemblies.
Easily edit your own movies
As soon as we enter the application and ask for all the permissions, we can create a new project. In this we will begin to introduce all the content with which we want to work to make a movie or a trailer. Apple distinguishes these two types of content when we create a new project in the application. In the case of Trailers , a pre-established template can be followed so that we do not miss too much while we work. In the case of the film , the traditional tools of an editor are enabled to combine videos, photos and music to create an authentic work of art.
Once we have decided what we want to do, we are presented with the possibility of selecting the multimedia content that we want to use and that we have stored on our equipment, be it iPhone, iPad or Mac. Once this is done, we can start editing our new project.
Interface and editing
In the case of the Mac we can find an interface that reminds us a lot of Final Cut Pro X but in a reduced version . In the upper left part we have access to the different contents that we are going to import from our Mac into the project. In the upper right part we can see the preview of the project as we apply new effects or transitions that we just have on top of the preview. And at the bottom we have the timeline where we are going to fit our content, to coincide with everything we want to do. Here our imagination must already fly to match a specific moment of the songs that we are placing with the video clips. But if you do not want to squeeze your head, Apple offers us a series of templates to create our new movie.
As we have previously said, we have a tremendously clean interface to prevent us from being overwhelmed. We can be adding different sound effects, or image effects such as a black and white color above a specific scene. It is true that in this sense we miss some more tools for image editing and treatment, since other tools include them but Apple has seen enough to give two of these. Another aspect that is limited in this case is the video layers, since although in third-party apps there are unlimited layers in iMovie there are only two.
Although all this we have said applies to Mac, on iPhone and iPad it is exactly the same. It is true that the importance of the timeline is somewhat lost and there is no space dedicated to the inclusion of content. We have to go looking for it in the folders of our computer by clicking on the ‘+’ that we have in the upper right corner. But for everything else we have access to the same tools to touch up the color of the scene or to apply transitions.
And once the project is finished, we can share it with a simple button with all the devices that we have around us, or project it through Apple TV on a television.
Price and availability
As we have previously said, iMovie is completely free and can be downloaded in the App Store for both iPhone, iPad or Mac. It can be said without a doubt that this is the economic alternative to Final Cut Pro , and a very good intermediate step. It is true that there are many people who do not know very well whether to opt for buying the video and music editing suite from Apple. But with iMovie you can try to see how the world of publishing is given to you before moving on to piloting a monster like Final Cut.
Obviously, as we speak of a free application, we can find many shortcomings, such as the lack of compatibility with chroma. But in the end you have basic tools to make a home project in a very simple way.
