At this point in the film, everything indicates that the trend of smartphones that are to come , go through an all-screen design. Different manufacturers have been trying it in different ways, with the pop-up front camera being the most striking. However, to avoid costly mechanical solutions that can be a headache in the event of a breakdown, hidden cameras under the screen are the next big step.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G can claim to be the first smartphone in history to have a hidden camera on the screen.However, some think that the technology is not yet mature enough to be implemented in a commercial smartphone. The truth is that the big manufacturers behind this technology, such as OPPO, have not yet made the leap.
Hidden camera for the “all-screen”
However, a new patent unveiled by LetsGoDigital and published in the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office) on October 23, shows the futuristic design of an OPPO mobile with a hidden camera under the screen. As can be seen in the sketches that accompany the documentation, the terminal has an all-screen design, without holes, notch or pop-up cameras in sight. In addition, the frames are reduced to a minimum, with a small frame at the top and bottom.
Circular module and headphone jack
The terminal shows the four rear lenses encased in a circular module . It is not something usual in the firm, but this design has already been used in the OPPO Reno Ace2, which was the first OPPO smartphone to use 65W charging technology. We see three cameras located horizontally and a fourth sensor just above these, with the LED flash at the bottom. There are no visible buttons or connectors at the top, but at the bottom it is surprising the presence of a 3.5mm jack, increasingly absent in the terminals launched in 2020.
Will it be a reality?
At the moment it is unknown if we are facing a terminal that will finally see the light. We could be facing the next Ace 3, which could be a good candidate as a test bed for OPPO to debut the under-screen camera technology, as it already did with its fast charge. Of which there is no doubt is that the cameras under the screen will make their stellar appearance throughout 2021.
