iMac M1 Teardown: Component Location and Teardown

iMac M1 Teardown

The iMac with M1 chip are already beginning to reach the homes of users and as is traditional, the first disassemblies of these new computers have appeared. In this way you can find all the ‘secrets’ that are located in the guts of the devices. In this article we show you all these details that have been found in the different tests carried out by iFixit.

X-ray revealing the location of all components

Whenever disassembly is to be performed, the first thing to do is a general x-ray of the equipment. As it happens when it is carried out in a human being, all the components that are inside can be clearly visualized. In this case iFixit has performed all these operations on a purple iMac with an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU and 8 GB of RAM. It is important to highlight this because in the case of having an iMac with 7 cores there are changes such as in the cooling system.

In the X-ray you can see the presence of two metal plates inside and a signal antenna that is just behind the company logo. While most of the relevant components like the M1 chip itself and the cooling system are at the bottom. Behind the screen there is no type of component so it is possible to have a fairly fine design. Although this bet should keep the lower part of the screen that was present in previous generations and that has always generated a lot of controversy.

The internal components of the iMac M1

In this case iFixit details that access to the different components is much easier than in previous generations. The entire front is a single piece of glass without a separate front. In addition, in order to keep this part fixed, a classic adhesive is used that is much less sticky than the one used in iPads, making repair easier.

The cooling system that it integrates is made up of two fans that introduce air from the outside to the inside, accompanied by several copper tubes to dissipate the heat. The air that is inside the iMac through these fans ends up exiting through two other short heat sinks. This ensures that the equipment does not end up overheating when working with it, although it is true that the new M1 chip does not generate a large amount of heat.

The motherboard includes an SK Hynix memory, a Kioxia NAND fast storage unit and the SoC M1 itself that is designed by Apple and where the CPU and GPU are included. In addition, the WiFi and Bluetooth modules and the chip that manages the energy have also been found, among other less relevant components. All this located in a small space that is undoubtedly remarkable. To this is also added the presence of a mysterious button that has three LEDs under which not much information is known today about its function, although in the next few days they will announce this.
