Performance, battery life and charge

The Huawei P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro have the Kirin 980 processor inside, while the P20 Pro boasts the older 970. As expected, the newer chip is faster and more efficient.

The Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro come in two memory layouts: one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and the other with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For its part, the P30 Pro comes with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage, and each version has 8GB of RAM. Only the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro have room for expansion, but it’s through Huawei’s proprietary Nano memory card.

From an energy standpoint, the P20 Pro lags behind with a 4,000 mAh battery, slower wired charging and does not support Qi wireless charging. While the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro have 4,200 mAh batteries, a fast 40W cable charge and a 15W wireless charge.

Winner: Huawei P30 Pro

Design and durability

All three phones look beautiful on the back with cool finishes that grab attention. The P30 Pro and P20 Pro are clearly part of the same family, with a set of offset cameras on the top left, while the Mate 20 Pro has a central square of lenses.

When we go around the front, the P20 Pro immediately shows its age with a diamond-shaped fingerprint sensor on the bottom, but the other two have on-screen fingerprint sensors.

Although the P20 Pro has a small notch at the top of the screen, the one on the Mate 20 Pro is much larger. For its part, the P30 Pro has a teardrop notch, which provides more space on the screen.

All three will survive a dive in shallow water, though the P20 Pro is IP67 rated and the other two are slightly tougher, rated IP68. However, we always recommend a protective case. As the saying goes, “prevention is better than regret”

Winner: Huawei P30 Pro

screen

All three phones have an AMOLED screen, but the one on the Huawei P30 Pro is the largest at 6.47 inches. In addition, it has a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels, which translates to 398 pixels per inch (ppi).

For its part, the Mate 20 Pro has a 6.4-inch screen with a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels, which is 538 dpi. The P20 Pro’s screen is 6.1 inches with a resolution of 2,240 x 1,080 pixels, which runs at 408 ppi. It’s hard to make a decision because they are all of great quality, but the Mate 20 Pro has a clear edge in sharpness.

Winner: Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Camera

The Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro are very similar, offering their triple-lens main camera with the following specifications: a 40-megapixel one with an f / 1.8 aperture, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an f / aperture. 2.2 and an 8 megapixel telephoto lens with an aperture of f / 2.4. In the P20 Pro there is a monochrome lens, instead of an ultra wide angle lens. Both have a 24 megapixel front camera.

For its part, the Huawei P30 Pro combines a 40-megapixel SuperSpectrum lens with an f / 1.6 aperture, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an f / 2.2 aperture, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens that offers 5x optical zoom.

What is SuperSpectrum? It is simply a new color filter that should allow the P30 Pro to receive up to 40 percent more light. It is also packaged in a Time of Flight camera for better depth detection and a 32 megapixel front camera.

Winner: Huawei P30 Pro

Software and updates

Although it was released with a previous version of Android, the P20 Pro has been updated and therefore these three phones have Android 9.0 Pie. However, the older two have EMUI 9 on top, while the P30 Pro has EMUI 9.1, which is supposed to bring some performance improvements.

Winner: Huawei P30 Pro

Special features

The P20 Pro is delayed again. We could highlight its monochrome lens, but the other two have better special features. Both the Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro have on-screen fingerprint sensors, but Huawei says the one on the P30 Pro is improved and should be more reliable.

Both also offer reverse wireless charging, which means you can charge any Qi-certified device with the back of your P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro. There are also some cool new features on the P30 Pro, like OneHop, which allows you to record your PC screen with your phone or copy and paste between your phone and PC.

Winner: Huawei P30 Pro

Price and availability

Unfortunately, none of these phones is officially available in the US. The Huawei P30 Pro is available on the manufacturer’s official site, but you can also find it on Amazon for about $ 600.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro are not officially available in Huwaei, although you can find it in some retail stores, on Amazon and also second-hand.

All three work with AT&T or T-Mobile in the US, but not with Verizon or Sprint.

Winner

It is no wonder that the Huawei P30 Pro is the overall winner. It is a very attractive device, with a large screen, plenty of power and storage, as well as an incredibly versatile camera. If you already own a P20 Pro, we’re not sure if the slight upgrades deserve a costly upgrade right now.

If you are thinking about renewing your phone and considering which one to choose, then the cheaper Mate 20 Pro may be a good option as it is very close to matching the P30 Pro in most areas and features a sharper display. , although it costs a little less.
