A year has passed since Huawei‘s Mate 30 Pro was unveiled, so the brand now has to renew its range to continue seeking mobile photography excellence. Therefore, today we have the Mate40 Pro with us, so we are going to tell you the first impressions of this device.
Some cameras that attract attention
These first impressions have a series of limitations, since the manufacturer at the moment only lets us talk about the superficial aspects of the phone and not its performance, but we have a lot to tell you, since that back ring is impossible to ignore.
As you will surely remember, the Mate 30 Pro boasted of offering a circumference on its rear back to place its cameras, and this time the manufacturer has repeated part of the formula to increase the dimensions of the package and offer a ring-shaped silhouette.
It is a pleasantly surprising design, and one that we would like to highlight, especially now that all phones have the same square or rectangle on one side of the terminal. We like seeing different designs, and we love this proposal from Huawei. So, good for them.
In this peculiar format we will find a 5x telescopic camera , an Ultra Vision wide-angle lens of quite a few megapixels (they have not confirmed how many), a second-generation Cine Camera , which is nothing more than a 3-format 12-megapixel sensor: 2 that is designed exclusively to record video (as the Mate 30 Pro already did), and a fourth low-resolution camera used for depth calculations.
This video camera will be able to record in 4K with HDR effects thanks to XD Fusion technology, in addition to enjoying stabilization and tracking system to continuously record a subject or object.
In the front cameras, the most striking point is the possibility of automatically switching to wide angle mode, since the system will take care of recognizing if we are taking a simple selfie or if on the contrary we are taking a group photo, at the moment that we will need more angle to complete the group scene.
All screen
Aesthetically, in addition to the touch of the ring of the cameras, the prominence falls on the screen, since thanks to its 6.76-inch OLED panel and curved bezels with a curvature angle of 88 degrees , the impression we have is that the front is practically all screen. Visually it is a joy, but at the level of use something tells us that it is going to cause us problems. We will see what conclusions we draw as we use it.
This display is a show of technology, as it has a DCI-P3 color profile, HDR support and a spectacular resolution of 2,772 x 1,344 pixels. The icing on the cake is put by the 90 Hz of screen refreshment , a speed that, while spectacular, is not the highest we find today on the market.
This big screen sensation is also achieved thanks to the elimination of the notch that we had in the previous generation, but do not think that technology has been lost in this step. In fact, Huawei has managed to squeeze the facial recognition system, and although some sensors have been removed, the depth unlock and face reading is still available as a biometric security method, in addition to the fingerprint reader integrated into the screen.
This sensor reinforces its presence with a new gesture functionality included in the software, and the Mate 40 Pro is capable of recognizing the palm of the hand to scroll vertically, horizontally and take screenshots. It is something that does not quite convince us, since we do not see it as a vital utility and the history (of Samsung) tells us that it usually happens without pain or glory. We’ll see.

The brand debuts with the Mate 40 Pro the new Kirin 9000, a brain that shares many things with the Kirin 990, but which is now manufactured in 5 nm technology and includes 5G connectivity. According to official figures, it offers a 30% and 50% increase in CPU and GPU respectively compared to the Kirin 990, and at the load level, it is 60% faster when using cable and 85% faster in wireless charging.
Huawei Software
As expected, this Mate 40 Pro arrives with the latest version of EMUI, EMUI 11, which is based on Android 11 to offer a version of the operating system free of Google software. The US ban is still active, so again, we have a new Huawei device with no Google apps, and you know what that entails.
Even so, the brand continues to strengthen its application store, and they already have a large number of applications that meet a large part of the needs of users, although we continue to have the absence of others of vital importance.
