How to Turn off or Force Restart an iPhone

There is probably no simpler and more useful action than turning off a phone. At Apple they make it easy on their classic mobiles, but from the iPhone X onwards it requires a combination of buttons that, despite not being complex, must be known. That is why in this post we tell you how to turn off an iPhone, regardless of the model it is. We also show you how to restart the phone, so you don’t have to manually turn it on.

How to turn off an iPhone 8 and earlier

If you have an iPhone 8 or a previous model, you are lucky to have the fastest and most intuitive way to turn it off. Included in this tutorial is the 2nd generation iPhone SE launched in 2020. To do this you must follow these simple steps:

Press and hold the lock button . This is the one found on the right side of the iPhone 6 onwards and on the upper right side of the iPhone 5s and earlier (including the 1st generation iPhone SE).
Drag the slider button .
Wait 15-30 seconds.

How to turn off an iPhone X or later

If you have an iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max you should know that the lock button is used to invoke Siri if it is held down for several seconds. Therefore there is no possibility to turn off the phone in this way, but there is a combination of buttons that will take you to this point. The steps to follow are those:

Press and release the volume up button.
Press and release the volume down button.
Press the lock button.
Drag the slider button .
Wait 15-30 seconds.

There is also an alternative to this method, following the steps below:

Press the volume down, volume up and lock buttons together .
Release the buttons.
Drag the slider button.
Wait 15-30 seconds.

With this last step you must be careful and quickly release the buttons as soon as you see the screen off, since if you press and hold the buttons you will activate the iPhone’s emergency functions.

Force restart an iPhone

There is a way to restart your phone automatically without having to wait to manually turn it on. This is very useful when there is a problem on the iPhone that prevents it from working properly and restarting it solves it. The process to force this reset depends on the iPhone model.

iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus and SE 1st generation

Press and hold the lock buttons and the Home button .
When the Apple apple logo appears, release the buttons .

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

Press and hold the volume down buttons and the lock button .
When the Apple apple logo appears, release the buttons .

iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max

Press and release the volume up button.
Press and release the volume down button.
Press and hold the lock button .
When the Apple apple logo appears, release the button .
