How to Use Multiple Apple Accounts on the Same Mac

Updated October 18, 2026: Clarified the difference between macOS users, iCloud sign-ins and separate purchase accounts.

You can use multiple Apple Accounts on one Mac by creating separate macOS user accounts. Each person signs into their own Mac user, then uses their own Apple Account for iCloud. This is different from trying to combine two iCloud identities inside one desktop session.

Choose the arrangement you need

Your goal Best starting point
Two people sharing one Mac Give each person a separate macOS user and password.
Keep work and personal environments separate Use separate Mac users where permitted by your employer’s device policy.
Access an occasional second web account Use the service’s web sign-in, with a separate browser profile if useful.
Use purchases from another Apple Account Check Media & Purchases and Family Sharing rules; this is not a second complete iCloud profile.

Create another macOS user

  1. Sign into a Mac administrator account.
  2. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Users & Groups.
  3. Choose Add User and authenticate when asked.
  4. Select a suitable account type. A standard account is appropriate when the person does not need to administer the computer.
  5. Enter the name and a separate password, then create the user.
  6. Log into the new user and sign into the intended Apple Account in System Settings.

Menu wording can differ on older macOS versions. Do not use a sharing-only account for someone who needs to log into the Mac normally.

What stays separate?

Separate users provide their own desktop settings and home folders. They do not automatically merge photo libraries, passwords or iCloud files. Share specific files deliberately through a suitable shared folder or cloud-sharing feature, and check which account owns each item before moving or deleting it.

Fast user switching can make a shared Mac convenient, but signing into a second user is not the same as changing the Apple Account in the first user’s settings. Avoid repeatedly signing out of iCloud merely to let another person use the computer.

Purchases and subscriptions need separate checks

The account used for Media & Purchases can affect access to apps, media and subscriptions. Family Sharing offers supported sharing options for eligible purchases; it does not make every purchase transferable or combine every account’s data. Check Apple’s current rules before changing a long-used purchase account.

Keep account recovery details and two-factor authentication available for each identity. If you also use separate Google identities, moving their data is a separate service-by-service task. On a managed Mac, ask the administrator which account and sharing arrangements are allowed before adding a personal cloud account.
