If copy and paste is not working in PowerPoint, test a short piece of text in a new presentation first. Then check whether the problem affects one slide, one file, the desktop app or PowerPoint in a browser. Save your work before restarting or repairing anything.
Start with the selection and destination
- Copy a short line of text and paste it into a new blank presentation.
- For text, click inside a text box. For a whole slide, select its thumbnail in the left-hand pane.
- Use the Copy and Paste buttons as well as Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V to check whether a shortcut is the problem.
- Try the same text in another app. If it fails there too, the issue may be wider than PowerPoint.

Cannot copy and paste slides?
Click the slide thumbnail rather than a picture or text box on the slide. After copying, click the thumbnail after which the new slide should appear. If the result looks different, check the available paste formatting option, such as keeping the source formatting.
Also check that you are allowed to edit the destination file. A read-only or protected presentation can behave differently; do not enable editing for a file you do not trust just to test the clipboard.
PowerPoint for the web: check clipboard access
The browser version has different clipboard limits from the desktop app. If it asks for clipboard access during a paste you initiated, review the prompt and allow it for the trusted PowerPoint site if appropriate. A browser or workplace policy may restrict that access.
Microsoft‘s web copy-and-paste guide covers slides, text and pictures. Its Paste Special guide explains format choices in supported desktop apps. Pasting a picture can be a workaround, but it will not keep the content editable in the same way.
Test add-ins with PowerPoint Safe Mode on Windows
- Save and close PowerPoint.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
powerpnt /safeand choose OK. - Test a small paste in a blank presentation.
If that works, check the add-ins you use and disable a suspected one at a time. Microsoft documents this in its Office Safe Mode guide. Exit and reopen normally afterward; these Windows steps do not apply to the Mac or browser app.
Repair Office if the problem continues
Install available Office updates, then follow Microsoft’s Office repair instructions. A repair can affect the whole suite, so close other Office apps and keep your sign-in details available.
