As web pages incorporate more and more multimedia content, it has become common to encounter websites that automatically play sound upon loading. While it’s easy to locate and stop the audio or video if it’s visible on the page, the real challenge arises when we can’t identify what is playing the sound.
Dealing with a noisy tab, whether it’s a playing song, a voiceover, or simply an annoying advertisement, can be headache-inducing. Fortunately, for users of Google Chrome, there are convenient methods to silence those tabs. Let’s explore the various ways to achieve this:

Mute Chrome tabs from the browser
Google Chrome provides the ability to individually mute specific tabs. This feature allows us to silence a tab that is playing sound while allowing other tabs to continue playing music or sounds.
To achieve this, follow these steps:
1. Identify the tab that is producing sound and locate it among your open tabs.
2. Right-click on the tab, and a context menu will appear, offering several options related to that tab.
3. From the options presented, select “Mute Site” to silence the website associated with that particular tab.

Control Chrome Audio from the Windows Mixer
In situations where multiple applications are running, including Chrome, and we wish to mute only the browser’s audio, we can utilize the Windows Volume Mixer. This feature is built into the operating system and can be accessed by right-clicking on the volume icon located on the right side of the system toolbar. Selecting “Open volume mixer” will open the Volume Mixer interface.
Within the Volume Mixer, we will find a collection of icons representing the various open programs at that time. Each icon is accompanied by its corresponding scroll bar, allowing us to individually adjust the volume, decrease it, or mute the sound for each specific application.

Remove the sound permission for a specific website
n addition to the previously mentioned methods, websites have their own permissions systems that dictate what actions they can perform on our PC and what resources they can access, including sound. To manage the permissions of a specific webpage, follow these steps:
- Enter “chrome://settings/content/all” in the browser’s address bar and press Enter. This will take you to the Content section of Chrome’s settings.
- Once on the Content settings page, use the search function to locate the webpage for which you want to control sound permissions. Click on the webpage’s entry to access its specific options.
- You will now see a comprehensive list of permissions offered by the webpage. Look for the “Sound” option, which allows you to customize the webpage’s sound behavior.
- Choose your preferred option for the webpage’s sound permissions. You can allow the webpage to play sound or prevent it from doing so.
- To revert the changes and restore the default behavior, simply set the sound permission back to “Automatic”.

Audio Control Extensions for Chrome Tabs
In addition to the methods mentioned earlier, we can utilize browser extensions to further control the sound within Google Chrome tabs. These extensions serve as small additions that can be installed in the browser to enhance its functionality and provide additional control over sound management.
unMute
Let’s start by discussing an extension for Google Chrome called “unMute.” This extension offers a convenient solution for manually or automatically muting tabs within the web browser. With the automatic mode, you can configure the plugin to silence all tabs except the current one, mute all tabs except specific ones, or mute only the remaining tabs. This provides flexibility in managing sound across multiple tabs based on your preferences.
MuteTab
Another useful extension for controlling audio in Google Chrome tabs is “MuteTab.” True to its name, this extension offers a range of customizable features for managing tab audio. It allows you to view and control tabs that are currently playing audio or have recently played audio. You can mute all tabs, including those in the background or in incognito mode.
MuteTab also provides keyboard shortcuts for quick and convenient control over tab audio. Furthermore, you can create white and blacklists to specify which websites should have their sound enabled or disabled.
With these features, MuteTab empowers users to have greater control over the audio in their browsing experience.
Smart mute
If you find it overwhelming to listen to audio from multiple Chrome tabs simultaneously, there’s another solution: Smart Mute. Once you install this extension, it grants you control over your audio experience. With Smart Mute, you can configure the plugin to play audio from only one tab at a time, providing a more focused and controlled sound environment. This way, you can enjoy audio content without the distraction of multiple sources playing simultaneously.
Auto Tab Mute
Another valuable extension to consider is “Auto Tab Mute.” This extension automatically mutes background tabs, specifically silencing any tabs that are not currently active and playing audio. This feature proves helpful as it allows you to seamlessly switch between tabs that have audio without the need to manually mute them, simplifying your browsing experience. With Auto Tab Mute, you can effortlessly navigate through various tabs without being disrupted by unwanted background audio.
Smart Tab Mute
If you desire to ensure that only one specific Chrome tab plays audio at a time, consider using the “Smart Tab Mute” extension. Once downloaded and installed, this extension guarantees that only a single tab will produce audio, even if you have multiple tabs open and running simultaneously. With Smart Tab Mute, you can maintain a focused audio experience by eliminating the possibility of multiple tabs playing sound simultaneously.
Mute Tab Shortcuts
Another extension that aids in muting Chrome tabs using keyboard shortcuts is “Mute Tab Shortcuts.” True to its name, this extension allows for quick muting of tabs by utilizing specific key combinations. For example, pressing Alt + Shift + M mutes the current tab, Alt + Shift + N mutes all tabs except the current one, and Alt + Shift + , mutes all tabs at once.
Mute Tabs
Furthermore, an alternative extension called “Mute Tabs” serves a similar purpose. It allows users to mute or unmute all Google Chrome tabs simultaneously, making it a viable replacement for the Windows volume mixer discussed earlier.
