How QoS Improves Online Games and Video Calls

We have more and more devices connected to Wi-Fi. In recent times wireless technology has improved considerably and we can have better speed, stability and quality. However, having many computers connected can also cause failures. In this article we are going to talk about how the QoS router function can improve when playing online games or streaming video.

QoS function to prioritize traffic

Having many computers connected to a network can significantly degrade quality. We may have problems when browsing, when using the different services and platforms. This can be even more significant when we play online or make a video call, two uses of the connection that will require the highest quality.

How QoS Improves Online Games

What the QoS function does is prioritize traffic . It allows to offer a more focused service on a specific device or application. In this way, if for example we are playing on the Internet and we need to have a good signal quality, this feature will allow the traffic to be prioritized. The same would happen if we are using an application to make a video call.

Let’s take as an example that we are going to make a video call and at the same time another person in our home is downloading large files from the Internet. The connection is limited, so using one device intensively the network could affect others. What this QoS function does is prioritize the traffic and in this way that the video call works correctly.

QoS means Quality of Service , in Spanish. It is a mechanism that most modern routers have. Its function is basically to prioritize traffic to what it considers most important. This allows the bandwidth to be available for those critical applications and services that we are using and that need the most stable connection possible. We already explained previously in a complete tutorial how QoS works.

We can think of our bandwidth as a multi-lane highway. If we are using many devices connected to the Internet, all those lanes are occupied. In this way, if at any given moment we are going to make a video call, we would find ourselves with congested traffic, slowness and problems. What the QoS function does is nothing more than allow one of those lanes to be used exclusively for that game or that video call that is going to need the highest quality.

Mejorar la latencia de Internet

QoS doesn’t make the internet faster

Keep in mind that QoS does not mean that our Internet goes faster. After all, the bandwidth that we have available is what it is. What it will allow is to improve the quality of the connection . It will offer higher performance so that certain applications can work properly.

Yes it will improve the ping or latency of the connection. We already know that it is something very important when it comes to playing online games or using video calling programs. It basically means that if we have a high ping there will be a delay when we make a call or are playing a game over the Internet.

The QoS function, which will improve the quality of certain programs and services, will help control the ping so that it is not too high and may interfere with its proper functioning.
