Clipboard History: What’s the Problem?

The clipboard history is a great Windows 11 feature that nicely saves copied data in the background, and those data can then be used later. However, after the 24H2 update many users have started reporting that their clipboard history is broken; it won’t store any items, and the history will be blank.

When you attempt to access it (through the “Windows + V” shortcut), you get the message saying nothing has been copied, regardless of how many times you try.

How to Fix Clipboard History in Windows 11

Microsoft itself has come out and admitted that it’s aware and is fixing it, it could take anything from a day to a month or more. Luckily, you can get your clipboard working again right now, until you catch this up.

Here’s how you can resolve it:

  1. Open Settings: Access the settings panel from the Start menu first.
  2. Go to System: Click on the System tab inside the settings window.
  3. Access Clipboard: Under system settings, find Clipboard.
  4. Activate Clipboard History: The first is to enable the Clipboard History option. It lets you use “Windows + V” shortcut to select items that you have copied (and then pasted when you press Ctrl + V if you wish.)
  5. Disable Recommended Actions: To the right of Clipboard History are Recommended Actions and just toggle that switch off. Do not close the window yet.
  6. Check Clipboard History: Paste the clipboard (by pressing Windows + V) and check if the things stored there are still up. After making sure the history works, go back and reactivate the Recommended Actions switch.
  7. Test Again: Check clipboard once again, see is it working fine.? If the issue persists, once more disable Recommended Actions as well as the device synchronization option.

Why Does This Happen?

The clipboard issue seems to be about combining the new update with some default settings that make it quite hard for Windows to save clipboard items. Temporarily, it clears the problem by disabling, then reenabling these features, while we wait for Microsoft to roll out a definitive fix.

Final Thoughts

It’s annoying when you find bugs like this right after a big update but the solution is simple and effective. Try that for yourself and hopefully it won’t bother your clipboard history. Also be sure to check back with Microsoft to hear of their permanent fix.
