When a Smart TV runs out of storage, first remove unused apps and review app data. A USB drive can add app storage on some supported televisions, but it is not a universal upgrade for every TV with a USB port. Storage space and RAM are also different things.
Identify the TV and the kind of memory problem
Check the model number and operating system in the TV’s About or Support screen. Android TV, Google TV, Samsung‘s Tizen and LG‘s webOS do not share one storage-expansion procedure.
An “insufficient storage” message normally concerns space for apps or data. Slow switching between apps may involve other causes. Connecting a USB drive does not physically increase the TV’s RAM, and a USB socket intended for media playback does not by itself establish support for installing apps.
Free existing space first
- Open the TV’s application or storage-management screen and review installed apps.
- Uninstall downloaded apps you no longer use where the TV allows it.
- Check large apps for cache controls or offline content.
- Restart and check the available storage again.
On supported Samsung models, Device Care and Manage Storage provide app and storage information. Samsung’s cache and data instructions also explain model-specific controls. Clearing cache and clearing app data are different: the latter can reset an app and require you to sign in again.
Some preinstalled apps cannot be removed. If your model lacks a menu shown in an online guide, consult its manual rather than entering a service menu or changing undocumented settings.
Check USB app-storage support on Android TV
Google’s Android TV storage guide describes adding a USB drive while explicitly noting that the steps do not work on every Android TV. Confirm support for your exact model, including compatible drives and whether apps can move.

These modes are not interchangeable. Formatting can erase the drive. Back up its contents first, read the TV’s warning, and do not format a disk containing your only copy of important files. Apps stored on the drive may become unavailable when you remove it, and not every app supports moving.
What if the TV cannot expand app storage?
Use its supported cleanup controls, keep fewer apps installed or use a separate streaming device for additional applications. Do not buy a larger drive merely because it works for movie playback: capacity alone cannot add an unsupported operating-system feature.

Keep resets as a later troubleshooting step
A factory reset removes settings and sign-ins and does not increase the physical capacity. Use it only when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting calls for it and you are prepared to set the TV up again. For persistent storage errors, provide the manufacturer with the model, firmware version and exact message.
