If you are having trouble updating iOS on your iPhone, don’t worry. It is not often common to find failures in this process, but it is also not strange considering that there are some factors that can make it difficult to download and install. In this post we tell you what you must do to solve this problem and be able to update your device to the latest version of compatible software.
Collapsed Apple servers
Every time a new iOS update comes out, tens of thousands of people try to update their iPhone from Settings> General> Software Update. In principle, Apple‘s servers are prepared to supply all of the software downloads, although there are times when the download can be very slow and in extreme cases it can completely stop the download. If the problem is this, unfortunately you only have to arm yourself with patience or wait a few hours to update the phone when there are fewer users connected to these servers. In any case, try to do what we discussed in the next two sections.
Problems with your WiFi network
Software downloads have to be done yes or yes via an internet connection via WiFi, so you cannot try to download via mobile data. Therefore, the most common recommendation we can make is to verify if the signal we have is good. Perhaps doing a speed test could be used to determine if this is the problem and if you have a low speed you could try resetting the router. If this doesn’t work either, you could try connecting to another network you have available.
Restart iPhone
There is a topic in the computer world in which it is said that everything is fixed by turning off and on a device. This is obviously not true although it has a basis of truth. In the case in which we find ourselves, it is possible that there could be some hidden process in the background that is generating problems to finish downloading the new software on the iPhone. The only way to end this process is by restarting the iPhone.
To restart an iPhone with Face ID or an iPhone 8, 8 Plus or SE 2020 you must follow these steps:
- Press and release the volume up button.
- Press and release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
To restart an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus you must press and hold the volume down button and the side button until the Apple logo appears. To do it on an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and SE 2016, you must press and hold the side button and the home button until the Apple logo appears.
In any of the cases, you can also turn off the iPhone for a few seconds and turn it on again. In a way it’s like a manual reset.
Update iOS with Mac or Windows PC
There is an alternative to updating the iPhone using the phone itself. We refer to the possibility of updating it with a computer, regardless of whether it is macOS or Windows. The steps to follow to update the iPhone with these devices you will see below.
On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later
- Connect iPhone to Mac via cable.
- Open a Finder window and click on the name of the iPhone in the left bar.
- Go to the General tab and click on “Check for update” .
- Follow the steps on the screen to download and install the new version of iOS and do not disconnect the iPhone until the entire process has been completed.
On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier
- Connect iPhone to Mac via cable.
- Open iTunes and go to the management part of the device by clicking on the icon at the top.
- Go to the Summary tab and click on “Check for update” .
- Follow the steps on the screen to download and install the new version of iOS and do not disconnect the iPhone until the entire process has been completed.
On a Windows PC
- Connect iPhone to computer via cable.
- Open iTunes and go to the management part of the device by clicking on the icon at the top.
- Go to the Summary tab and click on “Check for update” .
- Follow the steps on the screen to download and install the new version of iOS and do not disconnect the iPhone until the entire process has been completed.
