Microsoft is working very hard on the development of its new web browser, Edge Chromium . This new browser wants to end Google’s leadership and, for this, what better way to do it than by adopting its same web engine and improving practically everything that already exists. The new Edge is a modern browser, packed with features and better security and privacy. But it is not only this, but he also has great assets that, without a doubt, give him an advantage over his rival. And one of its best assets, in addition to its great PDF viewer, are the vertical tabs.
Lately we have seen how the developers of the most popular web browsers are looking for a way to revolutionize tabbed browsing. Chrome, on the one hand, created its groups of tabs; Vivaldi, on the other hand, multiple levels of tabs; and Edge , meanwhile, a new vertical tab system.
Edge’s vertical tabs began to arrive in the Canary version of the browser in May 2020. Since then, they have only received improvements of all kinds to help users navigate in the best possible way. Thanks to them, for example, it is possible to take better advantage of the width of the monitors, since they have more space from side to side than vertically.
This function is not yet available for all users, only for those who have downloaded and installed the Canary version of it. Additionally, Microsoft continues to shape it so that it can be made as useful as possible. Thus, one of the latest features that have been included in the browser is the ability to change the size of the tab bar . That’s how it works.
Adjust the size of the vertical tab bar in Edge
Until now, the vertical tab bar had a fixed size. When we activated it, it always occupied a fixed space. It does not matter the size of the monitor, or the name of the tabs; the bar was always the same width.
Starting with the latest Edge Canary, this is going to change. Microsoft has enabled the ability to allow us to resize this tab bar. To do this, we only have to place the mouse over the border of said column and, as in any other window, we can change its width.
We can make it larger, to better see the titles of the tabs , or smaller to have more space to see the web page in question and show only the web favicon and the name of the tab.
More features of vertical tabs
The possibility of changing the size of the column of tabs is not, by far, the only thing that the browser allows us to do. The first, and most important, is that we can toggle between vertical and horizontal tabs simply by clicking on a button that is always in view. We can also create groups of tabs vertically (still in the experimental phase) so that we can have them all much better organized.
And, of course, the typical functions of any tab bar, such as, for example, being able to move the tabs where we want and even anchor them to always have them at hand and that they open automatically when the browser is opened.
Vertical tabs are here to stay. Now it only remains to see if users are convinced by the new way of browsing.
