DTS Play-Fi Home Theater – Smart TV Speaker WiFi Standard

There is currently no widely held standard on the market for syncing wireless speakers for a wired- like sound experience with no lag. Bluetooth has lag and lossy compression. Others, such as WiSA , only work with a limited number of devices, as well as requiring additional specific hardware at a very high cost. For this reason, DTS wants to solve all compatibility problems with its new standard .

We are talking about DTS Play-Fi Home Theater , the new standard announced by DTS better than the previous Play-Fi . The previous standard was designed to deliver music to multiple rooms in the home that have a compatible speaker or amplifier, offering the highest quality. This sound quality is lossless, as exactly the same bits of data are sent over WiFi as would be reproduced through a speaker connected to the source.

This standard was designed to, for example, create a synchronized musical thread between all the rooms, so that, for example, we can continue listening to the same radio when changing rooms. Later, some television manufacturers announced that they would begin to support this standard for connecting speakers.

Now this standard has been enhanced with the creation of Play-Fi Home Theater , which, as the name suggests, is geared toward creating a home theater system with any compatible speaker system without having to rely on cables. The new system can be configured from a compatible television, as well as through an app on the mobile.

First compatible TVs this year

The first compatible televisions will begin to reach the market in the third quarter of 2021 , so before the end of September we should know the first compatible televisions.

One of the most important advantages of this new standard is that it will not be necessary for manufacturers or users to add any additional hardware to the televisions, since everything is managed by software and the data is sent using a normal and current WiFi through our local network. Thanks to this, there will be no latency problems.

With this system, we can for example use the TV speakers together with other external speakers at the same time. The TV speakers can make a center channel, while the sides can be used as a right and left channel (a 3.0 with only two external speakers to the TV).

We can add speakers as we want, including even two subwoofers at the same time. We can also listen to the sound of the television in the headphones through the mobile app, not depending on the range of the Bluetooth of our television, but on the WiFi, so we can move further away from the television to continue hearing, for example, a gathering or the sports commentary of a match.

In order to use a device with Play-Fi Home Theater, it will be necessary for them to be compatible by default with this new standard, although including compatibility will not imply additional costs for manufacturers as everything goes through software . Among the devices that will incorporate it we have speakers, televisions, sound bars, players and amplifiers from more than 30 manufacturers.
