Differences in the Battery of a Mobile Phone Using 5G or 4G Connection

There are more and more 5G mobiles that we can find, making them gain ground with respect to the classic 4G models, but nevertheless the change not only comes to the speed at which we can navigate with these mobiles, but it has a direct effect on battery and autonomy . This has been talked about for a long time as a great fear, although now studies try to clarify the differences that really exist.

Modems with 5G need more energy to function and this is what causes differences in consumption to a greater or lesser extent to exist in terms of the battery of our mobile. To get us out of doubt, the Italian DDay portal has carried out a study that tries to show us the reality graphically so that we can see how the battery changes when using the 5G or 4G network on the same device.

Battery consumption in 5G is higher than in 4G, but how much?

The tests that have been carried out with a YouTube video at the highest quality on the same smartphone with a Snapdragon 888 processor in 5G and 4G with the same situations, show us that the variation that we see in the following graph is 30-35%. A difference that can be noticeable, although it nevertheless has other effects on mobile phones, since as we see in the graph, it will take less time to download files or content and therefore it will be working for less time.

To make the study more complete, the battery consumption in mA that has occurred during the download of the videos in the two modes has also been analyzed. In this way we can see that the average consumption using 4G on smartphones is 335 mA, while in the case of 5G the average consumption increases to 440 mA, allowing us to see that representative increase in battery consumption of 32% in 5G that doesn’t have to always be identical.

Temperature, another element that 5G affects

Among everything that is affected in the smartphone when using 5G or 4G, we run into the temperature of the mobile phone. In this study, temperature data have also been collected that show us a minimal but representative increase when using the 5G connection.

In this way we can know that the temperature increases 2 degrees Celsius with respect to 4G in the same process. However, the temperature as well as the consumptions stop once the process has been completed, with the intention of not constantly affecting the smartphone, something that will take less time.

The key is in the download time

Taking into account both situations, both the temperature and the battery consumption are linked to the download time of the content, we can draw the conclusion that although the differences between 5G and 4G are considerable, they can be counteracted for a shorter time waiting that could end up equaling the battery consumption.
