Debian is one of the best Linux distributions that we can install on our computer. Although it is not the most widely used, most of the most popular distributions, such as Ubuntu, are based on it. This distro stands out for having a large community focused on it, in addition to being one of the most stable, open, that obtains the best performance and is more faithful to the Linux philosophy. With the new Debian 11 around the corner, version 10 has just received a new update, which we must install as soon as possible, especially if we are concerned about our security.

Each version of Debian has 3 years of normal support, and two years of extra extended support. Debian 10 “Buster” saw the light of day in July 2019. Since then, this version has been receiving maintenance updates in which all kinds of problems, bugs and errors have been fixed, in addition to plugging various security holes.

Debian 10 still has a long way to go. And the new version 10.10 takes care of it.

Changes and New in Debian 10.10

This new version of Debian does not bring major changes to the Linux distro. The big news are saved for the next version 11 of this Linux distro. The new Debian 10.10 is a security and maintenance update, especially focused on correcting all kinds of bugs and problems detected in this distro.

In total, the new version updates 136 packages within this Linux. 55 of these packages are focused on fixing bugs and security-related problems, and the remaining 81 are generic bugs related to the correct operation of the system.

Some of the most important patches that we can find in this new version are found in the Kernel , in the NVIDIA, OpenVPN, Firefox ESR, OpenSSl, Chromium and OpenJDK drivers. Also, the new Debian 1o.10 has removed an outdated package from the system as incompatible with the included version of Thunderbird.

The new Debian 10.10 is now available to all users, whether we already have the distro installed on our PC or if we are new users who want to give this distro a try.

If we already have Debian installed on the computer, it is not necessary to download the ISO image and install it from scratch to have these security improvements. All the changes are included within the repositories of this system, so we can update to the new version simply by executing the following command in a terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

These new patches include corrections in the kernel, so we must make sure to restart the computer at the end of the update process so that all the patches are applied correctly.
