Xiaomi Works on a Camera with a Tilt Sensor for its Mobiles

Earlier this month, Xiaomi celebrated its 10th anniversary with the launch of four new products, including the Mi 10 Ultra, but this could be just one stepping stone to Xiaomi’s success in the field of photography. LetsGoDigital has discovered a patent filed by the company that involves tiltable camera sensors like the ones shown in the following image:

patente xiaomi

This patent is intended for use as a “camera and terminal module” and was filed by Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in October 2019. It was approved and published in the database of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) on July 30. 2020. At the same time, the Chinese company even filed a patent application called Camera Mount and Terminal” , which details the implementation of the system proposed in the first patent on a mobile phone.

According to it, this technology requires two camera sensors with a small viewing angle. The two sensors can be controlled horizontally or vertically and can be rotated (tilted) at the same time to expand the viewing angle. The objective of betting on this format would be to find a solution to improve the captures of a wide angle, improving the quality by eliminating distortion compared to the results of a normal wide angle lens, at least in theory.

Xiaomi is not the only one

The Chinese brand is not the only one that is working in this direction because last year, specifically in December 2019, Samsung also patented a similar solution that was approved in June 2020. However, unlike the new technology For Xiaomi’s camera, the Korean brand’s patent requires a set of five or six cameras, including a telephoto lens unit, while Xiaomi’s option only requires two sensors.

As it usually happens with all patents, its approval does not mean that we will finally see it applied in a phone of the brand but it is a good example of the path that Xiaomi is following with respect to the cameras of its mobiles .
