Google Chrome is constantly experimenting with all kinds of functions and features in its browser. Many of them are activated by default so that all users can experiment with them, while other functions are usually hidden and, in order to test them, we must activate them by hand from the flags. In addition to the stable edition of Chrome, which is the one most of us use, Google also has two other versions that it uses for its experiments . On the one hand we have the Canary version, more advanced version, with more news and experiments, but the most unstable of all, and then the Beta version, more stable than Canary, with news that almost certainly reaches the stable version, but with bugs pending to be solved.
When Google implements a new function in the browser, to test it it is usually necessary to activate it through the experimental functions section, or flags. However, this section is often considered difficult for users who just want to quickly test a specific experiment. For this reason, Google has decided to simplify this process by creating a new tool for the Beta and Canary branches of the Google browser. This is Chrome Labs.
Chrome Labs: How to test what’s new before anyone else
Chrome Labs is a new section that Google has included within its browser in order to add all the new features that appear for the browser and allow users to easily activate or deactivate them . This new section appears to the right of the address bar with the icon of a beaker . By clicking on it we can see a list with all the experiments that Google is working on at the moment.
If we find one that we want to test, we simply have to expand the drop-down panel and activate it from there. We can see the same options that we would find in the Flags section, so, in addition to ” Enabled “, ” Disabled ” and ” Default “, depending on the experiment, we can find other parameters to choose from.
We can change the status of any experiment from this panel with just a couple of clicks. And all we have to do is restart the browser for the changes to take effect.
Activate Chrome Lab
This new function is designed exclusively for the Beta and Canary versions of Chrome, since they are the ones that usually bring more experiments. We can activate it if we also want in the stable version , although the number of news that we will find in this one will be much less.
Although it is expected that in the not too distant future Chrome Labs will be activated by default for all users of the Canary and Beta versions, for now it is another experiment. And, therefore, it is deactivated by default, and, paradoxically, we will have to activate it to use it from a flag .
We will write the following in the address bar of our browser:
chrome://flags#chrome-labs
And we will mark the flag that will appear as “Enabled”. We restart the browser and voila, this new function will already be activated, and we can see the beaker from which we can control the experimental news very easily.
