Chrome 89: News and Download of the New Version

Google Chrome is the most widely used web browser in the world. This browser has earned the trust of users over time, becoming the favorite browser of 8 out of 10 users. Google’s browser stands out for being stable, secure and compatible with all webs, and although there are many other alternatives (even better, in many ways), at the moment users have no intention of changing the browser en masse. At least while Google continues to release new versions like Chrome 89, a version that just arrived today.

Continuing with the development of Chrome, Google has just released a new version for its web browser: Chrome 89 . After a series of novelties in which we have hardly seen new functions and features, this new version does bring with it a series of new features designed to make the browser even easier to use and help us feel more comfortable with it.

Google Chrome 89

Let’s see what its characteristics are.

What’s new in Google Chrome 89

New profile system

The first of the changes that we find after updating the browser is that the profile system has been renewed. When we open the browser, and we have several profiles created, we will now see a new window from which to select the profile we want to use. The process for creating a new user has also been modernized, being able to log in with the Google account and customize the appearance of the profile in just two steps.

Reading list

In addition to bookmarks, Google has now enabled us a function from which we can save web pages that we visit to read them later. This new function is called ” reading list “, and it is available in the star icon that, until now, only served to add a website to bookmarks.

When adding a new page to this reading list, the first thing we will see is a new entry in the bookmarks bar. From it we will be able to access all the websites that we have saved, seeing which ones we have read and which ones are yet to be read. In addition, we can delete those that we no longer want or have already read.

Tab Search

If you are one of those who always accumulate many tabs, you will like this novelty. The new Chrome 89 launches a new tab search system thanks to which we will be able to search among all the tabs that we have open for the one we need in a moment.

This new function will enable a new icon to the right of the tab bar that, when pressed, will show us the search box. We can write what we want and see at the moment how the open tabs appear.

This function is disabled by default, and to activate it we must manually enable the flag:

chrome://flags/#enable-tab-search

HTTPS by default

Google continues to work to be able to offer users the best possible security. And therefore, from this new Chrome 89, when we visit a new URL without specifying the protocol, from now on it will always try to connect through HTTPS . If this is not possible, it will then be tried through classic HTTP.

Other novelties

Other relevant news that we find in this new version of the browser are:

  • The use of WebHID is enabled by default.
  • Support for NFC on Android.
  • Ability to decode the AVIF format on Android.
  • New requirement for old CPUs: support for Streaming SIMD Extensions 3.

And, of course, Google has also taken the opportunity to correct a series of vulnerabilities detected in the browser that could endanger the safety of users. Specifically, Google has fixed a total of 8 “serious” security bugs in Chrome, as well as a long list of bugs of medium and low danger that could be used to put us in danger.

Download or upgrade to Chrome 89

This new version of the browser is now available to all users. If we already have Chrome installed on our computer, the new version will automatically download to our PC in the background and, when we open the browser, it will be installed automatically. We won’t have to do anything.
