WhatsApp remains at the forefront of instant messaging applications with more than 1.6 billion monthly active users around the world. The tool, owned by Facebook, allows us to edit our profile by adding a photo, a name and information about us.
This data helps us so that our contacts can distinguish us from others and vice versa. But it is that in addition to changing our profile photo we can also change that of the contacts that we have added on the platform. This is something we can do whether these contacts already have a profile photo assigned or not.

How to change your profile picture on WhatsApp
The first thing we are going to see is how you can change your own photo on WhatsApp. To do this, open the messaging application on your phone and then click on More options > Settings.
- Click on your profile photo.
- Press “Gallery” to choose an existing photo or “Camera” to take a new photo
- When you have the photo you want, click “OK” to save the changes.
- If you already have a profile photo and you want to delete it, you just have to click on “Delete photo”.
How to change a contact’s profile picture
Now that we have seen how we can customize our profile picture, let’s see how to do the same with that of our contacts.
- First, you must select the image that you are going to associate with the contact in question. Ideally, the image should be in JPG format , since WhatsApp does not accept other image formats.
- Now you have to go to the directory on your phone where the profile images of your contacts are saved.
- From the route explorer it may vary, depending on whether the application is installed in the phone’s own memory or in the memory of an external card, but in any case, you should go to the WhatsApp / Profile Pictures folder in My files or from the root directory of the memory card.
In that route, the profile images of our WhatsApp contacts will be seen and it will be where we will have to look for the contact we want to change . Once located, it must be replaced by the new image that must have the same name as the original. It is recommended to rename the current profile picture or delete it and copy the new picture with the name of the original.
Once this process has been carried out, we can go to the main screen of the application to search for the contact, click on it, and once inside the chat screen of that user, access their profile information by clicking on the top bar in which the image chosen by the contact in their profile, their name and the call icons, send attachment and menu are displayed. At that time the profile information window will open where the image selected by us should be displayed at the top of the screen, which includes its name and which can be expanded by clicking on it.
How to put a profile picture to a contact who does not have
Today, the profile photo of our contacts is one of the aspects that allows us to distinguish them most quickly, although sometimes they may not directly have a profile photo. In this case we have the option of assigning a profile photo that we ourselves choose.
To do this, the first thing we must do is have a file explorer in our terminal. Many manufacturers include some within the pre-installed applications in their models, but if they do not have any, in the official stores of the different platforms it is possible to find several for free.
Once the application that we have in our device, we have to choose the image you want to add as a photo of profi to that contact that does not have it for easy identification. It is possible to take a photo from the terminal’s camera or choose from one that we have in the gallery or send us from another device. It is important to say that the format must be jpg and that the name of the image must be the contact’s phone number including the international prefix (34) as shown in the contact itself from WhatsApp.
Once we have the photo correctly renamed, from the file explorer it is necessary to navigate to its location.
- Select the image.
- Move or copy it to the WhatsApp> Profile Pictures directory .
- Go back to the application and from contacts click on the menu button.
- Choose Update option and you will see how when you search for the contact to whom we have just assigned your profile photo, it is already associated with it.
