Canon EOS R5

At an event via streaming Canon released new specifications of the Canon EOS R5 , a camera that has been coming for a long time rumored that it could be a before and after for the company. Especially in video subjects, where she has always been criticized for the decisions she had made in other models available on the market for the cuts she applied or the limitations compared to what she did offer with her EOS Cinema range.

So, let’s talk a little bit about this new camera. First of all, it must be remembered that Canon made the jump to its EOS R system in 2018 and already commented that it would be a proposal for the future. That same future is becoming more real, although they continue to preserve everything related to their classic DSLRs. And it is logical that they are taking the leap seeing the good work that Sony and Panasonic are doing.

However, now is not the time to compare, the important thing is to know what this Canon EOS R5 has to offer. First of all, the camera has a Full Frame sensor and everything you need to record video at 8K resolution . This is the most prominent and important, especially considering the size of the body.

With the same look of an existing DSLR or models as the Canon EOS R or RP, this new camera is capable of recording at a resolution that until recently was intended for cameras such as those of EPIC or ARRI that cost much more than what will this cost. Furthermore, they are much more bulky systems due to the resources required to capture and process video at such resolution. If you remember, the Lumix S1H that we have analyzed integrates a fan for when it is most required.

Well, this Canon EOS R5 records at 8K resolution at 30 fps and in RAW format even in its internal memory (SD card). If instead of recording at 8K we want slow motion, then it is recorded at 4K resolution and with a frame rate of 120 per second. If we add to this the different formats such as Canon Log or HDR video recording in 4: 2: 2 color profiles at 10 bit, we believe that there is little more to say.

If it wasn’t enough, the Canon EOS R5 will include 5-axis body stabilization and the Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system. That is, even without knowing a lot of data yet such as the sound quality, the autonomy that its battery will offer and other aspects or possible limitations, the Canon EOS R5 is a milestone for the company and could be the object of desire of any fan and video professional.

What you do not expect is an inexpensive camera. It will be in relation to other professional video options, but your body will easily be around 4,000 euros. And to that you would have to add objectives. Although Canon plays with advantages there, because the existing lens portfolio and how well its Canon EF mount adapter works facilitate the transition of DSLR cameras to these new mirrorless proposals.
