How to Install Dolby Atmos on Android Phones

Sound is a very important attribute of our mobiles, although it rarely represents a key aspect in the purchase decision. We are seeing more and more mobile phones with stereo speakers that offer a better sound experience like those with high resolution audio. Manufacturers also incorporate other technologies that enhance this aspect such as Dolby Atmos.

Dolby technology has been with us for years, present in all kinds of sound devices and being present in cinemas with films as popular as Star Wars or Batman vs. Superman. Both have used Dolby Atmos surround technology, which shortly thereafter has given some mobile phones. It was in 2015 when the Lenovo A7000 was introduced, the first mobile in history compatible with this technology.

How to install Dolby Atmos on an Android mobile

But since not all phones are compatible, we will have to take a shortcut to install Dolby Atmos on any phone and thus improve its sound. There are two different methods to achieve this, depending on whether our mobile is rooted or not . Starting from the assumption that most people do not root their terminal, we will start with the first formula.

Without the rooted mobile

To achieve this we only need three things: an unrooted Android mobile, the Google Play Music application and the Dolby Atmos application. The first thing we will have to do is install the Dolby Atmos application and make some adjustments, which we detail step by step:

  • We download and install the Dolby Atmos application.
  • We restart the phone after the Dolby Atmos app has been successfully installed.
  • We install the Google Play Music application from the Play Store (we can skip this step if it is already installed).
  • We disable the default equalizer of our Android phone. This will avoid the error of “The application stopped …”
  • We open the Google Play Music application and touch on the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner.

  • Click on settings and scroll down.
  • We navigate to the equalizer and open it. Now we will have to enable Dolby Atmos from there. (most of the time it will be activated automatically)
  • We return to the music library and play any song.
  • Ready

With the rooted mobile

The following method is for all users who have already previously tracked with their mobile. The requirements in this case are the rooted terminal running on Android Jelly Bean 4.3 or higher; the bootloader unlocked; custom recovery installed (Twrp preferably) and the Dolby Atmos.zip file

  • We download the Dolby Atmos zip file.
  • We make a backup copy of our data (always recommended).
  • We turn on the mobile device and restart in Recovery mode
  • We navigate to the option to install and look for the Dolby Atmos zip file.
  • We slide to install.

  • We wait a few seconds we will be shown the message that everything was installed correctly.
  • We clean the cache and the Dalvik cache.
  • We restart the mobile and Dolby Atmos will already be operational.

In many cases, this system helps improve the sound of many terminals that is not as loud as it should. There should also be an improvement in audio quality , especially when listening with headphones.
