Apple Deems Older iPhones Obsolete: Is Your Phone at Risk?

The recent release of iOS 17 has brought about significant changes, including a list of iPhones that will no longer receive updates, including essential security updates. While these devices might still function, using them leaves users vulnerable to potential cyber threats.

Apple has updated its list of iPhones that are now considered obsolete, marking the end of technical support and updates of any kind, particularly security updates. Typically, this designation comes around seven years after a device’s distribution ends. Even if your older device is still operational, Cupertino suggests it might be time to consider a new phone to ensure your digital safety.

The iPhones that are now considered obsolete include:

  • iPhone 3G (mainland China) 8 GB
  • iPhone 3G 8GB, 16GB
  • iPhone 3GS (Mainland China) 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 3GS (8GB)
  • iPhone 3GS 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 4 CDMA
  • iPhone 4 CDMA (8GB)
  • iPhone 4 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 4 GSM (8GB), black
  • iPhone 4S (8GB)
  • iPhone 5c

The classification of obsolescence might conflict with the Royal Decree-Law 7/2021 of April 27, which regulates warranties and repair periods. This regulation establishes a warranty period of three years and a spare parts availability of ten years. However, this only applies to phones purchased on or after January 1, 2022, so older models may not benefit from these considerations.

Consequently, even if Apple considers the iPhone 14 or 15 obsolete in the future, current legislation would protect users, preventing these devices from being declared obsolete until 2032 and 2033, respectively.
