Synopsis and critique
As we have mentioned, Wolfwalkers is an animated film that was acquired by Apple TV + in 2018. This Irish animation stars Robyn and Mebh who have completely opposite cultures. The first is an aspiring hunter who spends her days practicing the crossbow with her falcon. On the other hand, Mebh is a Wolfwalkers who lives in the forest and has magical abilities that allow her to become wolves when she sleeps, being able to heal wounds and ask the rest of the wolves to obey her orders. Obviously we are seeing how one of the protagonists has the mission to hunt down the other. The problem will be that they end up crossing in the forest by pure chance, causing a practically instantaneous connection.
The problem of this whole story comes from the Lord Protector who orders to exterminate all the wolves in the forest. It is precisely in one of these forays where the two protagonists meet, creating this bond that is hardly going to be broken. As is logical, Robyn is going to be put between a rock and a hard place, who will have to choose to disobey the Lord Protector or obey him even if that has as a consequence having to exterminate all the wolves including Mebh. Throughout the story we will see how the plot of these two protagonists unfolds that will be full of suspense and will surely overwhelm the hearts of many people while they watch this film. In addition, we will always see a Lord Protector who is an authoritarian being who does not have any kind of compassion for his subjects and who will be very present throughout history. To give you an idea, the character that is transmitted is a being that if you do not adhere to Catholicism they categorize you as a simple pagan. This is where the grace of his name ‘Protector’ comes in as it is totally ironic.
Something really positive about this film is undoubtedly its art. It is something that can rarely be found in another type of film, being something almost unique. The feeling of happiness is conveyed while despair is also displayed. At all times on the screen you will have something to look at since you will be drawn into some drawings that are undoubtedly exceptional with a very successful animation. Whenever you think about these types of films, important companies like Pixar come to mind, but in this case Cartoon Studios have achieved a more than good result to match Pixar.
Launching in theaters and Apple TV +
Although Apple acquired the rights to the film Wolfwalkers on September 8, 2018, it was not originally released on its online platform. It was on September 12, 2020 when it was released at the Toronto International Film Festival, maintaining the classic premiere that any type of film has, giving this ‘pleasure’ to creators. Days later, it hit the big screen in the UK and the US on October 26 and November 13 respectively. It finally reached all users with a subscription to Apple TV + on December 11. This premiere undoubtedly responds to the wishes of directors and producers for public recognition.
At the moment this production has won several important awards from different film festivals. This is undoubtedly a great sign that critics have accompanied this new Apple TV + production on the right track.
