How to Open APK Files on Windows: Run Apps or Inspect the Package

Android APK files on Windows

Open an APK as an archive if you want to see its files. Use a compatible Android emulator if you want to run the app. You can inspect an APK on Windows 7, 10 or 11 with an archive tool that supports your PC. Running it on Windows 7 depends on the version of the emulator.

Can you open APK files on Windows 7?

To see the contents, open the APK with a ZIP-compatible tool such as 7-Zip. Use a version that matches your Windows installation. On a 32-bit PC, check that the archive tool or emulator supports a 32-bit Windows host. A label such as “Nougat 32-bit” describes the Android instance.

To run the app, check the emulator version. BlueStacks lists 5.21.300 and earlier for Windows 7 and 8. Newer BlueStacks 5 releases require Windows 10 or later. Microsoft ended Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. For everyday use, choose a PC with a supported version of Windows and get the emulator from its publisher.

What happened to Android apps in Windows 11?

Microsoft‘s Android-app support page says Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore stopped being available in Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025. Do not follow an old “coming soon to Windows 11” guide as a current supported installation route.

A community package using an old subsystem is a different project. Check who maintains it, its requirements and update policy rather than assuming Microsoft still supports it.

Install an APK in BlueStacks 5

  1. Get BlueStacks from its developer and check the current requirements for your Windows PC.
  2. Get the APK from the app’s publisher or another source you can check. Keep a note of the app version and required Android version.
  3. Start BlueStacks 5 and select Install APK in the side toolbar.
  4. Select the file in File Explorer and open it.
  5. When installation finishes, open the app from the emulator’s home screen.

BlueStacks also documents dragging an APK or supported XAPK onto its home screen. Its installation guide explains both methods. Use the guide for your exact BlueStacks version; a cloud-game option is not the same as locally installing your APK.

Test your APK in the Android Studio emulator

For app testing, create or start an Android virtual device in Android Studio’s Device Manager. Drag the APK onto the running emulator’s screen and wait for the installation. Open the app from the app list. See Google’s emulator installation steps.

Inspect an APK without running it

An APK uses ZIP formatting. In File Explorer, right-click it and choose 7-Zip → Open archive if the menu is available. You can also select the APK from your archive tool. If it expects a ZIP extension, rename a copy to .zip for inspection. Some files inside are compiled, so use APK Analyzer if you need to read the manifest.

Android Studio’s APK Analyzer can show package contents, file sizes and the final AndroidManifest.xml. With a project open, use Build → Analyze APK or drag the package into the editor. It can also inspect supported app bundles; this does not turn an AAB into an APK installer.

If installation fails

  • Check the exact error, Android version and emulator version.
  • Check whether the download is a single APK, a split package or a format that needs its publisher’s installer.
  • Check the app’s processor and service requirements.
  • Do not assume a banking, protected-media or online game app permits emulator use.

Signing a package or scanning it does not guarantee that it is harmless. Avoid modified APKs that promise free paid features, and do not switch off security protection simply to complete an installation. If Windows flags an emulator installer, see our Microsoft Defender quarantine guide to check the detection before you run the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an APK without an emulator?

Yes, if you only want to view its contents. An archive tool opens the package as data. To use the app, you need a compatible Android device or emulator.

Which BlueStacks version can run on Windows 7?

BlueStacks lists version 5.21.300 and earlier for Windows 7 and 8. Check the installer’s host requirements and the app’s Android requirements separately.

Can I rename an APK to EXE?

Changing a filename does not convert Android software into a Windows program. Use a compatible Android environment to run the app.

Is extracting an APK the same as installing it?

No. Extraction lets you inspect package files. It does not launch the Android application.

Why does an APK work on my phone but not an emulator?

The app can depend on a particular Android version, processor, service or device feature. Check the publisher and emulator requirements rather than assuming compatibility.
