Android FRP and Google Account Recovery After a Reset

Updated on

If Android shows Verify your account after a factory reset, use a Google account that was previously added and synced to the phone. If you forgot the email or password, start with Google’s account recovery on a device you already use.

Why Android asks for the previous Google account

Factory Reset Protection, or FRP, helps protect a phone if it is lost or stolen. On a protected phone, the setup screen can ask for a previously synced Google account. Depending on the device and the way it was reset, Android may also offer a previous screen lock. Use an option shown on the setup screen. See Google’s device protection guide.

How to recover access after the reset

  1. Find the account. Check a browser, Gmail, or another phone where you are already signed in. If you forgot the email address, Google’s sign-in help explains how to find it with a recovery phone number or email and the name on the account.
  2. Recover the password. Use Google Account Recovery. If possible, use a familiar device, browser, and location. Follow the prompts to confirm the account belongs to you.
  3. Finish Android setup. Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and sign in with an account that was synced before the reset. If several accounts were on the phone, use one you can still access.

If you changed the password recently, give it time before trying again. Google recommends waiting 24 hours before a factory reset after a password change. For a Galaxy that has already been reset, Samsung says a new password may also be subject to a 24-hour wait. See the Google reset instructions and Samsung’s device protection guidance.

What to do if the phone belonged to someone else

Ask the seller or previous owner to complete setup in person. Once they can use the phone, they can remove their Google account in Settings and reset the phone through the manufacturer’s normal reset menu. They can enter their own password. If you cannot reach them, contact the seller about a return or ask the manufacturer what help it offers with proof of purchase.

Before you reset a phone you can still use

  • Confirm you can sign in to the Google account on another device. Save your backup and check that you can access it.
  • If you are giving the phone away, remove your Google account from the phone’s settings before you reset it. Follow the reset steps for your model.
  • If you already made a backup, see how to restore your phone data from a backup after setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a new Google account to finish setup?

The verification screen needs an account previously added and synced to that device. If the screen offers an alternative such as the previous screen lock, follow the prompt.

Do I need a computer to recover the account?

You can use Google’s recovery page on another phone or tablet. A device and browser you have used with that account can make verification easier.

Will resetting the phone again remove the Google account prompt?

Factory Reset Protection can still require verification after another reset. Recover the account or contact the device maker for help with proof of ownership.
