Realtek Audio Drivers: Find, Install and Fix the Right Version

Realtek HD Audio drivers for a Windows PC

To download the right Realtek audio driver, start with the support page for your exact laptop, desktop or motherboard model. Choose the audio package that matches your Windows version, install it and restart the PC. A driver with a newer date is not automatically a better match.

If you already have sound, you do not need to replace a working driver just because a download site lists another version. If sound is missing, check the selected output and volume before installing anything.

Where should you download Realtek audio drivers?

Download source When to use it
Your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page First choice for a model-specific audio package and its companion apps.
Windows Update Use available compatible updates, including an optional audio driver when needed.
Realtek’s official audio download page Check the supported hardware and Windows versions carefully before using a generic package.

The official Realtek HD Audio downloads include older Windows driver packages. Their presence does not make them suitable for every Windows 11 PC. Realtek’s manufacturer-driver notice explains that generic downloads may leave out features added by the PC or motherboard maker.

Use the manufacturer’s own support site, rather than an unknown mirror, a shared Google Drive folder or an advert for a paid driver updater. Official driver downloads normally do not require buying an updater subscription.

Check your PC model, Windows version and installed driver

  1. Find the model on the PC’s label or its manufacturer’s support app. For a custom-built desktop, use the motherboard’s exact model.
  2. Open Settings > System > About. Note the Windows version and System type. If a download offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages, match the installed operating system. An Arm-based PC needs a package explicitly supported for that device.
  3. Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, then open the Realtek device’s Properties > Driver.
  4. Note the provider and version before changing anything. This gives you a reference if you need to return to the previous package.

Not every PC uses a Realtek sound chip. USB headsets, Bluetooth devices and a monitor’s HDMI or DisplayPort audio can use different drivers. Reinstalling Realtek will not repair every audio connection.

How to install the manufacturer’s audio driver

  1. Open the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and choose your Windows version.
  2. Find the audio category and read the package’s installation instructions. Download the compatible driver and any components the manufacturer requires.
  3. Save your work. If the download is a ZIP file, extract it first, then run the supplied installer.
  4. Follow the installer. Some packages remove an older driver and ask for a restart before continuing.
  5. After installation, restart as instructed. Open Settings > System > Sound, select the intended speakers or headphones and test playback.

If the manufacturer provides driver files without an installer, follow its instructions. Device Manager’s Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers can install a compatible extracted package. Microsoft‘s manual driver installation guide explains this route. Do not force an incompatible device from the list.

How to check Windows Update for an audio driver

Microsoft also provides drivers through Windows Update and optional driver updates. The menus differ:

  • Windows 11: open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Review Driver updates if offered.
  • Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Check for updates, then open View optional updates if it appears.

Install only the relevant driver you need, then restart and test. An empty optional-updates list does not prove that a driver is missing. Likewise, Device Manager saying that the best driver is installed does not rule out a newer compatible package on the manufacturer’s site.

Realtek HD Audio Manager or Realtek Audio Console?

The driver lets Windows use the hardware. The management app provides settings such as an equalizer or jack options, depending on the PC.

Some older packages use Realtek HD Audio Manager. Other systems use Realtek Audio Console or the manufacturer’s own sound app. For example, ASUS documents Audio Console settings for supported notebooks. The available controls vary by model.

Search Start for the app named in your manufacturer’s instructions. If it is missing or cannot connect, check that the correct complete audio package is installed. Installing a random old manager or a control app alone does not replace the required driver.

Still no sound after installation?

What you notice What to check next
No sound, but the driver is listed Check output selection, mute, volume and cables. Windows may be playing through a monitor.
Sound stopped immediately after an update Check whether Roll Back Driver is available for the affected device.
The installer says the device is unsupported Recheck the PC model, Windows version and system type. Do not force the package.
Only the management app is missing Check the manufacturer’s required app and driver components before replacing working audio.

For a recent bad update, open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > the affected device > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. It is available only if Windows still has a previous version. Otherwise, use a supported package from the manufacturer. Microsoft’s post-update audio guide covers recovery.

If that fails, follow Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting steps. Avoid deleting every hidden sound device or changing several drivers at once. For sound that keeps getting louder or quieter, see our guide to automatic volume changes.

Instructions reviewed on October 27, 2026. Windows 10’s standard free support ended on October 14, 2025; installing an audio driver does not extend that support.

Frequently asked questions

Are Realtek audio drivers free?

The official driver downloads covered here are available without paying for a third-party updater. Check that you are on the PC maker’s or Realtek’s genuine website before downloading.

Which Realtek driver should I download for Windows 10 64-bit?

Use the Windows 10 64-bit audio package for your exact PC or motherboard model. Confirm System type in Settings > System > About. The Realtek name alone is not enough to choose a package.

Can I use a Windows 10 driver on Windows 11?

Only if the manufacturer says that package supports your device on Windows 11. Do not assume an older generic HD Audio download is compatible just because both systems are 64-bit.

Do I need to uninstall the old driver first?

Follow the package’s instructions. Many installers handle the replacement themselves. Keep the correct downloaded installer available before removing a driver manually.

Why is Realtek Audio Manager missing?

Your system may use Audio Console or another companion app instead. Check the manufacturer’s instructions. A missing tray icon alone does not mean the sound driver is broken.

Will reinstalling Realtek fix a USB or Bluetooth headset?

Not necessarily. Those devices can use their own audio drivers. Select the affected output in Sound settings and troubleshoot that connection first.
