PS1 Emulators for PC: DuckStation, RetroArch and Mednafen

A PS1 emulator can run compatible PlayStation game data on a computer. Choose an emulator that supports your operating system, then check its BIOS, game-image and controller requirements. There is no universal minimum specification or guarantee that every enhancement works with every game.

Compare three approaches

Option Useful when Check first
DuckStation You want a dedicated PS1 interface and setup wizard. The current build for your OS and processor.
RetroArch with a PS1 core You already use RetroArch for several systems. The selected core’s BIOS and graphics requirements.
Mednafen You want a multi-system emulator and are comfortable following its setup guide. PS1 settings and controller setup.

Start with DuckStation

The official DuckStation project lists current Windows, Linux and macOS builds and supported disc-image formats. Its documentation requires a BIOS image and explains that one is not bundled; use your own console’s dump and game data you are entitled to use.

  1. Download the correct build from the official project.
  2. Run the setup wizard and point it to your BIOS and game directory.
  3. Map the controller buttons and choose a suitable controller type for the game.
  4. Start with default graphics settings.
  5. Test gameplay and an ordinary memory-card save before experimenting with enhancements.

The current Windows build requires Windows 10/11 rather than the old Windows XP-era requirements sometimes quoted for PS1 emulation. Check the project’s current requirements for your hardware.

RetroArch and Mednafen

RetroArch is a frontend that runs different emulator cores. The Beetle PSX HW documentation lists firmware and renderer requirements; installing RetroArch alone does not supply every core’s required files.

Mednafen’s PS1 documentation explains its BIOS setup, which controllers it supports and how memory cards work. Choose it based on those needs rather than assuming a multi-system emulator is automatically simpler.

Common setup problems

  • Game will not start: confirm that the BIOS and game-image files are present and correctly selected.
  • Missing music: check the disc-image structure; a CUE file can describe multiple tracks that a lone BIN or ISO may not preserve correctly.
  • Broken graphics after an enhancement: return to defaults and change one option at a time.
  • Controller ignored: check the mapping and the controller type accepted by the game.
  • Lost progress: back up memory-card files. Save states and in-game saves are different and may have different compatibility across versions.

Older projects such as ePSXe or PCSX-Reloaded may suit an existing setup, but don’t choose one based on old version numbers or claims that it runs “every game.” Use each project’s official downloads and compatibility information.
