Android Auto Keeps Asking Who to Call? Here’s What to Try

If Android Auto keeps asking “Who do you want to call?” after you say a saved contact’s name, try saying the person’s phone number. Some drivers report that this gets the call through. Do the checks below while parked so you can use the car display and your phone if needed.

Drivers have reported the same loop in Google’s Android Auto Community. Google’s team is collecting details about the issue as of November 6. See the original Android Auto Community question and Android Authority’s coverage.

Test a saved name and a phone number

  1. Connect to Android Auto and tap the microphone on the car display.
  2. Ask it to call a person using their full name as it appears in your contacts.
  3. If it asks who to call again, say “Call” followed by the phone number saved for that same person.
  4. If neither voice command works, open Phone on the car display and select the person from Contacts. If that fails too, try the call from the Phone app on your handset.

Both Gemini and Google Assistant support calls by name and number. Google also lists the ways to place a call from the car display.

Check contacts and app updates

  • Look for the contact on the phone and in the car. If it appears on the phone but is missing from the car’s Phone app, make sure Android Auto is connected to the phone that has the contact.
  • Try Gemini on your phone if you use it there. If it also fails to call saved contacts outside the car, review the Phone permission for the Google app and the contact information setting. See Google’s guide to making calls with Gemini on Android.
  • Install available updates and retry. Check Android Auto and the Google app in the Play Store. Restart your phone, reconnect to the car and repeat the same test.

If Android Auto also drops its connection, review our Android Auto setup tips. You can also try a USB data cable if your car supports wired Android Auto. See our guide to Android Auto audio and connection settings.

Report the calling loop to Google

On your phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. Tap the menu in the top right and choose Send feedback. You can also search for Android Auto in Settings if your phone uses different menu names. See Google’s Android Auto feedback instructions.

Include the phone model, Android build, Android Auto and Google Play services versions, and the car or head unit model. Say whether you connect by USB or wirelessly, which assistant you use, when the problem began, and which of the calling tests worked. Use placeholders for names and numbers in a public forum post.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Android Auto show the right name and still ask who to call?

Some drivers see the contact’s name on the display even though the call never starts. If you see that too, include it in your report. It tells Google that the name appeared correctly and the call failed at a later step.

Can the same issue affect text messages?

Yes. Drivers have reported a similar loop when they ask Android Auto to text a saved contact. If both calling and texting fail, mention both in your feedback.

Which phones have been mentioned in reports?

Reports include the Pixel 10 and 10 Pro and the Galaxy S24, S25 Ultra and S26. The same parked tests can help you describe the symptoms on other Android phones.

How do I call a contact who has several numbers?

Try specifying the number type in your request, such as “Call Alex Rivera’s mobile number.” If the voice prompt loops again, choose the specific number from the contact’s entry in the car’s Phone app while parked.
