If the YouTube app on your Android phone shows “Server Error 400” or “There was a problem with the server [400]”, check Google’s current issue notice before making big changes to your phone.

Start by updating YouTube and restarting the app. Work through the checks below, and read the data effects before choosing a reset option.

Has Google fixed the Android error 400 problem?

There have been two important updates in the official TeamYouTube error 400 thread:

  • November 1: Google said the issue was fixed and listed steps for people still affected.
  • November 3: Google acknowledged that some Android users were still seeing the error and said work on a fix was continuing.

That later update matters. An older post or search result marked “fixed” does not mean every affected user has recovered. Check the dated updates in Google’s thread for the latest position.

Choose the right step before deleting app data

Step What it changes When to try it
Update and restart YouTube Installs an available app update and starts the app again. First, before resetting local data.
Clear cache Removes temporary app files. A lighter troubleshooting check.
Clear storage / Clear data Resets local app data and removes YouTube downloads. One of Google’s options for this incident.
Uninstall and reinstall Removes the app and its local data, including downloads. An alternative if a full uninstall is available.
Try the mobile website Uses a browser instead of the Android app. To test another viewing route while the app has trouble.

1. Update YouTube and restart it

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device.
  3. Open Updates available, find YouTube, and tap Update if offered.
  4. Close YouTube and open it again. Restart your phone if the problem continues.

These steps follow Google’s YouTube app update instructions. If no update is offered, move to the next check.

If an update cannot install because the phone is full, use our guide to freeing Android storage safely to review removable files.

2. Try clearing the cache

On many Android phones, open Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. Samsung and other brands may call the storage page something slightly different.

Open YouTube and test again. Google’s Android storage guide explains that cache contains temporary data. Clearing it is different from clearing storage, which resets the app’s local data.

This is a general app check. If it does not help, Google’s incident-specific instructions point to Clear storage, rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

3. Clear YouTube storage if you accept losing downloads

Before continuing: YouTube videos downloaded for offline viewing will be removed. Local app settings may also need to be set up again.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.
  2. Go to Apps, then choose YouTube. You may need to tap See all apps first.
  3. Open Storage & cache or Storage.
  4. Tap Clear storage or Clear data and read the confirmation message.
  5. Confirm only if you are ready to reset the local app data.
  6. Open YouTube, check the selected account, and try loading the home screen and a video.

The menu names vary between phones. Google’s Pixel app troubleshooting guide shows the Storage & cache route and explains the data-erasure effect.

4. Reinstall YouTube as an alternative

If your phone offers a full Uninstall option for YouTube, you can remove the app and install it again from Google Play. Remember that reinstalling also removes downloaded videos.

Some phones include YouTube as a system app and do not allow a full uninstall. Google explains this limitation in its preinstalled-app guidance. If you cannot fully uninstall it, use the clear-storage option above.

Choose one reset method, then test the result. If the error remains, check the latest incident update before repeating the same process.

5. Check whether the problem is limited to the app

Open YouTube’s mobile website in your browser and try a video there. YouTube also documents mobile-browser access in its device and app support guidance.

  • The website works, but the app fails: You have another way to watch while checking the app issue. This result alone does not reveal the exact cause.
  • Both fail: Check whether other websites and apps load. If practical, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, allowing for your data plan.
  • Only one video fails: Try another video and note whether the message changes.

Google’s general playback troubleshooting guide covers connection checks and restarting the app or device. For a 400 error specifically in a web browser, our separate YouTube browser error 400 guide covers browser-side checks.

What if the error still appears?

Use the latest update in the TeamYouTube thread to decide whether Google is still investigating. If the app lets you reach its menus, follow Google’s Send feedback instructions. Depending on the app layout, this is under your profile menu’s Help & feedback or Settings.

Useful details to include are:

  • The exact error message and when it happened.
  • Your phone model, Android version, and YouTube app version.
  • Whether the mobile website works.
  • Whether the error happens on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both.
  • Which troubleshooting step you tried and what changed.

If the app steps do not help, report the result and watch for a further update.

Frequently asked questions

Why does YouTube show server error 400 on Android?

Google has acknowledged an Android issue with this message. The error alone does not tell you whether your case has the same cause, so check its current notice and test the app using the steps above.

Where can I check whether the problem is fixed?

Use the official TeamYouTube thread linked near the start of this guide. Read its most recent dated update, especially if the headline and an older update give different impressions.

Is Clear cache the same as Clear storage?

No. Clear cache removes temporary files. Clear storage, sometimes called Clear data, resets local app data.

Will clearing YouTube storage remove downloaded videos?

Yes. Google warns that clearing storage or reinstalling YouTube removes downloaded videos. Be ready to download them again when the app is working.

What if I cannot uninstall YouTube?

It may be a preinstalled system app. Use its Clear storage or Clear data option instead of trying to force a full uninstall.

Can I watch YouTube in a browser while the app is broken?

Try the mobile website. It may provide a working viewing route, although it is not a guaranteed workaround for every account or connection problem.

Should I factory-reset my phone?

A phone-wide reset is a much bigger change. Try the app steps first and report persistent errors.
