If Steam is stuck on “Loading user data,” check for a wider service problem before changing files on your computer. Then restart Steam and your device. If the same account gets stuck on different devices or networks, contact Steam Support before trying a full reinstall.
The message alone does not identify the cause. It also does not mean your installed games or saves have been deleted.
Is Steam down, or is the problem on your device?
During the October 26, 2026 reports, Steam Community users described this exact loading loop, including cases where browser access still worked. The reports describe users’ experiences; they do not establish the cause or Steam’s current status.
Start with Valve’s network troubleshooting checklist and look for recent reports of the same symptom. A working Store page is useful to test, but it does not prove every part of Steam is working.
| What happens? | What to try next |
|---|---|
| Many people report the same loop at the same time | Pause local repairs and check for service updates. Reinstalling cannot repair a server problem. |
| Only one computer is affected | Restart the client and computer, then test the connection. |
| The same account fails on different devices and networks | An account or service issue is possible. Send the results to Steam Support. |
| Steam opens normally, but one game will not start | Follow game-specific troubleshooting instead of treating it as a login problem. |
These checks narrow the possibilities; they do not diagnose the cause on their own. Avoid repeatedly resetting your password just because the loading screen remains.
1. Close Steam fully and restart your device
Closing the window may leave Steam running. Try a normal exit first, then restart the device. Valve includes restarting both Steam and the computer in its basic client troubleshooting steps.
| Device | Restart steps |
|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 | Choose Steam > Exit if the menu works. If it is unresponsive, close the stuck Steam app in Task Manager, then restart Windows. |
| Mac | Choose Steam > Quit Steam. If it will not respond, use macOS Force Quit, then restart the Mac. |
| Steam Deck | If the menu responds, choose Steam > Power > Restart. After restarting, check Steam > Settings > System for updates. |
Let an active game save or file synchronization finish before closing the client. For a Deck that is completely unresponsive, use Valve’s model-specific restart instructions; the power-button timings differ between LCD and OLED models.
2. Test a different connection
Open another website to check basic internet access. If possible, test Steam on a different network or use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. If you normally use a VPN or proxy, try your normal direct connection for comparison.
If Steam works on the other connection, that points toward the network path rather than proving the client is damaged. Review the router, connection and firewall rules for Steam. You do not need to turn off your firewall or antivirus as a first step.
3. Clear the download cache only if Settings opens
If Steam lets you reach its menus, try its built-in cache option:
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache, then confirm.
- Sign back in and test again.
Valve says clearing the download cache preserves installed games, but signs you out. Make sure you can sign back in and access Steam Guard first. This is a general troubleshooting option, not a confirmed cure for every “Loading user data” loop. Skip it if the loading screen blocks Settings.
4. On Windows, repair the client before uninstalling
If the problem appears limited to that Windows PC, the earlier checks failed, and there is no sign of a wider incident, you can try reinstalling over the existing client:
- Close Steam and back up important game saves.
- Download the installer from the official Steam website.
- Run it and select the same folder where Steam is already installed.
- Finish the installation, then launch Steam again.
Valve’s installation guide supports running the installer again to repair an existing installation. This is different from uninstalling Steam first: Valve warns that uninstalling can remove installed game content.
Do not delete the entire userdata folder as a quick cache fix. Valve’s Steam Cloud guide explains that local cloud files and account settings can be stored there. Save locations also vary by game, and not every game uses Steam Cloud.
What about Mac, Steam Deck and GeForce NOW?
- Mac: use the restart and connection checks above. If a reinstall is necessary, follow Valve’s Mac-specific instructions rather than Windows folder-deletion advice.
- Steam Deck: follow the Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide. Start with a restart and available updates. A factory reset is a poor first response to a problem that may affect the account or service.
- GeForce NOW: check NVIDIA’s service status, end the affected session and try launching again. A Steam installation inside a cloud session is separate from the Steam installation on your own PC.
If Steam itself now loads but one game still fails, use Valve’s game update and installation checklist. Our Steam guides cover other game and client questions.
When to contact Steam Support
Contact Steam Support if the loop persists, especially when the same account fails across devices or networks. Include the exact message, when it started, your operating system, whether browser sign-in works and the checks you already tried. A screenshot is useful; keep passwords and Steam Guard codes out of it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Steam having issues today?
Check current reports and their timestamps. This loading message alone cannot confirm an outage, and a working Store page cannot rule out an account or client-service problem.
How to clear Steam user data?
For troubleshooting, start with the built-in Clear Download Cache option if Settings opens. Deleting the userdata folder is a different action and can remove local account or game-related files.
Why won’t Steam load my profile?
Test whether your profile opens in a browser and whether the client fails on another device. If both show problems, include that in a support request instead of assuming installed game files are responsible.
Why is my Steam taking so long to load?
The screen does not identify one cause. Check whether the delay affects only one device, follows a client change or happens to the same account elsewhere. Those details help you choose the next step.
Will reinstalling Steam delete my games?
Valve says installing the Windows client into its existing folder preserves installed games. Uninstalling first is different and can remove them. Back up important saves before making installation changes.
Can I use Offline Mode instead?
Possibly, if it was already set up and the game supports offline play. Valve’s Offline Mode guide says it cannot bypass a required fresh login. Games that need an online service or external launcher may still be unavailable.
