For your own YouTube upload, download the video through YouTube Studio, then convert the local file if you need MP3. For someone else’s work, use an authorized download or ask the creator for an audio file. Wanting a video for personal listening doesn’t automatically give you permission to download or reuse it.
Choose the correct starting point
| Your goal | Useful route |
|---|---|
| Audio from your own video | Use the original recording or your Studio download. |
| Background music for a new video | Choose music with permission covering that reuse. |
| Listen offline inside a streaming app | Use its supported offline feature; this is not necessarily an MP3 export. |
| Convert an existing authorized video file | Use a local converter and keep the original. |
Google explains how to download your uploaded videos. A download button inside a streaming subscription should not be assumed to deliver a reusable audio file.
Convert a local video in a desktop tool
Wondershare UniConverter offers video-to-audio conversion. Check the current trial, paid features and supported system before installing; this guide does not certify it as the safest or universally free option.
- Import the local video file.
- Select an audio output such as MP3 in the converter’s current interface.
- Choose the output folder and suitable audio settings.
- Convert a short sample and listen to it before processing a whole collection.
- Keep the original file separately.
Wondershare’s conversion guide documents its workflow. FFmpeg is another option for users comfortable with command-line conversion; choose what suits your needs rather than relying on speed claims that haven’t been tested.
MP3 is not lossless
MP3 uses lossy compression. A higher output bitrate cannot recreate detail missing from the source, and converting already compressed audio can introduce another compression step. “Same as source” in an interface does not mean an MP3 conversion preserves every original bit.
Check online services carefully
A familiar converter name doesn’t prove who runs a particular site or whether it’s safe. Don’t allow notifications, install an unrelated extension or upload private recordings just to convert a file. Limits, quality and availability can change, so a 2024 comparison is not a current test.

Frequently asked questions
Can YouTube Studio download somebody else’s video?
The Studio download route described here is for your own uploaded videos.
Does converting to 320 kbps restore missing detail?
No. A higher output bitrate cannot recreate detail absent from the source.
Does a streaming offline button export an MP3?
Not necessarily. Offline playback inside an app is different from receiving a reusable audio file.
Should I keep the original recording?
Yes. Keep it separately so you can make another export without repeatedly compressing an MP3.
