Updated 20 October 2026.
This article originally discussed the 2022 Apple Studio Display. That distinction now matters: Apple also has a Studio Display introduced in 2026. The older model’s specifications, ports and compatibility should not be used as a description of every display carrying the name.

What the 2022 model offers
The original display combines a 27-inch 5K panel with built-in speakers, microphones and a camera. Its appeal is a tidy desktop setup for a compatible Mac, particularly when sharp text and workspace resolution matter.
According to Apple’s 2022 Studio Display specifications, it has 5120×2880 resolution, 600-nit brightness, P3 color and a 12MP Center Stage camera. Its upstream connection is Thunderbolt 3 with up to 96W host charging, alongside three downstream USB-C ports.
Do not mix the two generations
| Feature | Studio Display 2022 | Studio Display 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 27-inch 5K, 600 nits. | 27-inch 5K, 600 nits, specified at 60Hz. |
| Host connection | Thunderbolt 3. | Thunderbolt 5. |
| Additional connections | Three USB-C ports. | One downstream Thunderbolt 5 and two USB-C ports. |
| Camera | 12MP Center Stage. | 12MP Center Stage with Desk View. |
| Official Mac compatibility | Includes listed Intel and Apple silicon models. | Lists supported Apple silicon Macs with macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later. |
Apple’s 2026 model specification supplies the newer details. A familiar name and similar panel size do not establish identical host support or connectivity.
Strengths worth considering
The older model can suit a desk focused on documents, photos and other detailed desktop work. Built-in audio and video-call hardware reduce separate accessories. Whether those functions justify a particular asking price depends on your existing equipment and the display’s condition.
This update is a specification-based reassessment, not a new hands-on test. It does not claim measured color accuracy, uniformity, camera quality or speaker performance for an individual used unit.
Limits to check before buying
- Inputs: the 2022 model has no HDMI socket. Do not assume a console or arbitrary USB-C device will work.
- Stand: the tilt-only stand has no height adjustment, but Apple also offered a height-adjustable stand and a VESA configuration.
- Camera: judge a sample call with current software rather than equating the sensor’s megapixel count with every app’s call output.
- Compatibility: check the exact computer, operating system and cable.
Our video connector guide explains why a connector’s shape alone does not establish display support.
Check the model and configuration
Use Apple’s display identification guide, confirm the stand, and ask to see the panel, ports and camera working. Compare the actual offer with alternatives that fit your desk and computer; avoid relying on an old review’s launch-era value judgment.
