How to Connect Two Phones by USB: Transfers, Migration and Charging

Updated 19 October 2026.

Connecting two phones with a USB cable can support a device-migration workflow or limited power sharing, depending on the models. It does not guarantee that either phone can browse all the other’s files. Start with the task and the destination phone’s supported instructions.

Choose the job before choosing the cable

Task What you need to establish
Move to a new phone A supported migration process for the old and new devices.
Copy a few existing files A supported file-sharing method or transfer through a computer.
Share battery power Compatible power roles and device support.

Check the actual connectors: phones may use USB-C, Lightning or an older connector. A cable that fits can still lack the data capability or adapter arrangement required by the chosen workflow. Unlock both devices, follow their trust or permission prompts, and use a reliable compatible cable.

Use the destination phone’s migration tool

For a new Pixel, Google’s transfer instructions explain the available cable and wireless options and the data that can move. The process varies with the source device and destination model. A supported migration tool handles more than treating one phone like a USB flash drive.

For iPhone-to-iPhone migration, Apple provides wired transfer instructions for the relevant connector combinations. Modern USB-C iPhones do not require the same setup as older Lightning models. Follow the applicable section rather than assuming every iPhone needs a chain of adapters.

  1. Back up important information before beginning.
  2. Read the migration instructions for the exact source and destination.
  3. Charge the devices and provide any required network connection and account access.
  4. Connect them when the setup process requests it and approve the relevant prompts.
  5. Keep the connection intact until the process finishes.
  6. Verify important data and app access before erasing the old phone.

Copying individual files is a different task

Two connected phones do not necessarily offer a general file browser for one another. USB roles, operating-system support and the selected app matter. A MIDI option is for a different kind of device communication, not a general-purpose file-transfer mode.

If direct copying is not supported, use the platform’s supported nearby-sharing method, cloud transfer or a computer as an intermediate destination. Check whether the sharing app preserves the original file or converts it. For large clips, our video-storage guide helps estimate how much free space the receiving device needs.

Check reverse charging separately

Power sharing depends on the devices’ USB power support and negotiated roles. Some Android phones expose a reverse-charging control; others behave differently. Do not assume every connected pair will choose the direction you want or deliver fast charging.

Apple’s USB-C iPhone guide describes supported connections and limited charging of compatible small devices. That capability is not equivalent to a dedicated high-power charger. If the phones do not provide a supported power-sharing mode, use an appropriate charger or power bank.

If nothing happens when you connect them

Confirm that the cable supports the intended function, unlock the phones and inspect their USB notifications and permission prompts. Follow the specific migration app rather than repeatedly changing unrelated USB modes. Stop if a connector is damaged, gets unusually hot or cannot seat normally.

After verifying a successful transfer, use supported cleanup controls on the old phone. The Android storage guide distinguishes removable files from app data and operating-system storage.

Frequently asked questions

Will any USB-C cable transfer data between two phones?

No. Both the cable and the devices must support the selected data workflow. Physical connector compatibility is not enough.

Can I transfer everything simply by plugging the phones together?

Use the destination’s migration process and check its supported data types. App sign-ins, protected content and some settings may require separate steps.

Can two phones charge each other?

Some combinations support power sharing, but the direction and available power depend on the hardware and software.

Should I erase the old phone as soon as copying ends?

First verify important files, messages, app access and any required account or security setup on the new phone, and keep a suitable backup.
