Free music services do not all replace Spotify in the same way. Some offer ad-supported catalogs, some emphasize independent uploads, and others behave like radio. Check your region and required listening mode before creating an account.
Four free-listening routes
- YouTube Music: available without a paid membership, but music background play, ad removal and offline features can require Premium. Podcast rules differ. See Google’s service guide.
- SoundCloud: useful for artists, mixes and uploaded tracks. Some catalog access and offline listening belong to paid tiers; review its listener subscriptions.
- Amazon Music Free: an ad-supported option with mode and catalog restrictions. It is different from the service included with Prime and from Unlimited; compare Amazon Music plans.
- Internet radio: station websites and apps can provide free live listening. You usually cannot choose the next song, and ads or regional restrictions may apply.
Discovery services are not the same as streaming
Last.fm is useful for tracking listening and discovering music, but should not be presented as a directly equivalent unlimited streaming catalog. Deezer’s plans and availability also need a current regional check; an old free-tier claim is not enough.
Local files are another option
A player can play music files you own or have permission to use without a streaming subscription. That does not make commercial recordings free to obtain. Check file formats, library import and device storage. Our iPhone and iPad music-player guide covers local playback choices.
Compare the limits that affect you
Test whether you can select a specific track, skip songs, listen with the screen off and save music for offline use. Separate an ongoing free plan from a time-limited trial. Check mobile and desktop behavior independently.
Data use, advertisements and listening interruptions matter as much as the size of a claimed catalog. Choose the route that supports your routine rather than assuming every “free music” app includes downloads and unrestricted on-demand play.
