3 Reasons to Use Ubuntu Instead of Another Linux Distribution

When we talk about Linux we never talk about it as an operating system, but we usually do it in the form of distributions. A Linux distribution is an operating system that has taken the Linux kernel as such, has modified it and has added all kinds of packages and programs to make it a fully functional system. More or less complex, but functional. Therefore, the expression “I’m going to install Linux” does not make much sense, since we will never install the pure Kernel without more, but what we usually install are rather distributions. And one of the best known is Ubuntu.

3 Reasons to Use Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution developed and maintained by Canonical . Although lately it is losing the interest and trust of many of its users, for a long time it has been one of the best and most used, especially on the desktop. And it is that it offered a simple to use environment, very complete and light and a large community ready to help users with any problem or question.

Today, users who decide to jump into this ecosystem are leaving Ubuntu aside to choose other different distributions, such as MX Linux, Manjaro or Mint . However, Ubuntu still has a lot to offer. And if you are in doubt about which distro to choose, these reasons will help you see the bright side of Canonical’s system.

You have problems? Any Linux user knows Ubuntu

One of the advantages of choosing Ubuntu over a different distro is that any Linux user has tried Ubuntu, before or after. Broadly speaking, this operating system is like the gateway to this ecosystem.

Thanks to this, if we have any problems, any user who controls Linux, even if they do not use this distribution, can help us to solve the problems. The Internet is also full of support for this distro, so we will easily find other users who have had the same problem and, obviously, how to fix it.

Also, being a Debian-based distro, the troubleshooting is the same as Debian. And all the programs designed for it will work flawlessly on the Canonical distro.

Easy, free and open source

Another of the main advantages of this distro is that it is very easy to use. Canonical distributes it to offer a good out-of-the-box experience , from the moment we load the distro in live mode until we have it installed and working. Ubuntu installation is very simple and fast, being able to let the system create the necessary partitions or create and mount them ourselves.

The Ubuntu desktop (GNOME) is a very simple to use desktop that will offer us everything we need to be able to work with it. We will have a vertical task bar on the left side of the screen, and a launcher menu where we will find all the programs that we may need.

To install new programs we can either search for them in their own software center, or if we are already a little more advanced, use the “apt install” command to install the package. And if we are even more Windows, we can download the installers (files in DEB format) from the web, and install them by double clicking on them. Easier, impossible.

Of course, this distribution is completely free and, except for some very specific components (such as some drivers), it is completely open source.

Do you like customization? Choose one of their “flavors”

The default Ubuntu desktop is GNOME. However, there are users who do not like this desktop, for various reasons. Therefore, if we want a totally different experience, without losing the essence of Ubuntu, then we can resort to one of its official flavors:

  • Kubuntu. With KDE desktop it is one of the most customizable versions and with more effects that we can install.
  • Lubuntu. Thanks to its LXQt desktop, we can have a fast, light and modern distro.
  • Ubuntu MATE . The MATE desktop is intended for users seeking simplicity and nostalgia for the GNOME2 desktop used by this distro until 2010.
  • Xubuntu. Your XFCE desktop offers us a stable, lightweight and, above all, customizable distro.
